Aakash Chopra lauds Shami’s Spell on England World Cup clash

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was impressive during the match against England in the World Cup 2023 on Sunday. He dismissed four wickets for 22 runs in seven overs.

He helped the side fold the defending champions for 129 runs. Ben Stokes struggled with Shami’s spell and was sent out on a duck on the 8th over. He stumped the specialist batter on the final ball with a full-length delivery.

Stokes was frustrated and tried a shot but the ball came in sharply and sent the stumps in the air. Former player Aakash Chopra was impressed with the pacer’s skills and applauded his over against Stokes as the Over of the tournament.

“Considering India put up a total of just 229 – it was bound to make one concerned. We also had to take into account dew being a major factor later on. But the way the Indian pacers bowled, was impeccable to see.”

“Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami taking early and important wickets really put them on the back foot. For me, Shami’s over – when he bowled round the stumps to Ben Stokes was the ‘Over of the tournament’. Overall, the bowling unit worked in tandem and absolutely dismantled England’s batting order,” Chopra said.

“Shami’s over to Ben Stokes was the best over of this #CWC23. Shami was consistent. Penetrative. Asked probing questions of a top-quality batter. Unfortunately, the batter chose to walk away from the fight.”

“The shot Stokes played following the series of play and misses when England was already reduced to 33/2 didn’t add up. Imagine a young batter responding to hostile bowling like he did,” he wrote.

“Rohit Sharma, yet again, led from the front and I still don’t know why he isn’t celebrated enough. It’s hard to sustain your innings when you keep on losing wickets on the other end. But he played a very important knock. Suryakumar Yadav came in and helped stabilize the innings along with KL Rahul, who was looking in good touch as well, but a poor shot cost him his wicket,” he concluded.

With six consecutive wins, India assured their spot in the Semi finals despite three matches to be played in the group stages. India will be playing their next World Cup match against Sri Lanka on November 02, at Wankhede Stadium.
