As the Ashes 2023 is reaching its peak, Pat Cummins is clear on reviewing all options that will be considered in choosing the playing 11 for the crucial fourth Ashes Test against England at Old Trafford.

The Australians expect to have all-rounder Cameron Green and experienced seamer Josh Hazlewood available for selection after they missed the Third test while reordering the top of the batting order will have the advantage to add their third victory from the fourth Test.

The opener David Warner fell twice for destruction to Stuart Broad at Headingley for scores of four and one, the left-hander now has 141 runs for the series at an average of 23.50.

The lefthander has now been removed by England 17 times in his career, prompting Australia to ask whether he is worth the risk of retaining even with a 2-1 lead over England in the five-Test series.

Cummings said he was about to review all options when selecting Australia’s 11 for Manchester and a decision would not be made to close the Test and seeing the conditions in the match.

Cummings said, “You keep all options open. We’ve got nine or 10 days now, so we’ll take a deep breath. We’ll go away for a few days.

“But everyone comes back into it. Greeny should be fit for Manchester. Josh (Hazlewood) will be back in there as well. So we should have a full roster and we’ll have a look at the wicket and have a chat and work out the best XI.”

Cummins also expects to use inexperienced spinner Todd Murphy against Manchester, after the right-armed bowler just two overs during England’s second innings as the seamers preferred at the crucial point of the match.

Murphy was able to take one wicket for the contest which was his first appearance of the series in the absence of Spinner Nathan Lyon, but Cummins thinks he has more influence over the remainder of the series.

“It was conditions based as it didn’t spin quite as much as we thought it would,” Cummins explained.

“We would have liked to have got Todd into the game a bit more and I am sure next week in Manchester there will be a bit more spin for him.”

Australia captain Michael Clarke said, “The number one issue is you’ve stuck with Warner, given him every opportunity, and (Stuart) Broad’s still got his number.”

“The thing you’ve got to think about first is, is David Warner’s time up?”

Warner has set out on his retirement plans, announcing earlier in the tour against Pakistan at home.
