IPL 2022 Retention, Rules
The latest report claims that BCCI decides to allow IPL teams to retain 4 players for IPL 2022. Following the rules mentioned above for retention, teams are allowed to retain one in two ways:
- Three Indian players along with one overseas player
- Two Indian players with two overseas players
- The above-mentioned format has not yet been approved by the BCCI in terms of players retention. Holding the best 4 players of the team will reduce the chance of accessing the star players for the new 2 teams that are yet to add to the IPL 2022 mega auction.
- A report suggests that eight IPL franchises will be allowed to keep as many as three players to their core. If an IPL side has retained 3 players ahead of the auctions, they can use their RTM card to avail the services of two more players from the auction pool once again.
- In previous mega auctions, the franchises were allowed to use the Right-to-match (RTM) card through which they were allowed to match the auction price of the players. The rule is applicable only during the Mega IPL auction when franchises can retain only 3 players ahead of the season.
- The Right to Match Card (RTM) is a facility that allows the teams to avail the services of players who have previously played for the franchise from the auction pool.
- So, if an IPL side has retained 3 players ahead of the auctions, they can use their RTM card to avail the services of two more players from the auction pool once again.

- The IPL 2022 format is not something unfamiliar to the IPL cricket community. The format has been used in 2011 IPL where the tournament is played with a total of 10 teams.
- The ten teams are divided into two groups of five.
- A random draw was used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice.
- In the group stage, each team plays 14 games facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times.
- IPL Points Table system: The team winning a match will be awarded 2 points. The losing team will not receive any points. In case of a draw or no result, both teams will be awarded 1 point.
- A four-game playoff stage following the Page playoff system is held after the group stage. Four games will be played in the playoffs:
-
- Qualifier 1: between the teams ranked first and second in the group stage.
- Eliminator: between the teams ranked third and fourth in the group stage.
