IPL 2022 Auction Rules
A mega auction takes place after every 3 years while IPL regular auction takes place every year as an IPL mini-auction.
These Auctions are held to ensure that teams get an opportunity to get the team balance as well as it’s an opportunity for players especially Indian uncapped players and foreign players to enter the IPL.
In IPL Mega Auction, each IPL team gets the opportunity to retain a maximum of 3 players by a combination of the RTM and Direct Retention.
What is RTM in IPL 2022 Auction?
Right to Match (RTM) allows each franchise to bring back any 2 released players but they also need to follow the rule of a maximum of 3 capped Indian players via Retention and RTM combined.
As per the new guideline by the BCCI, the team management can either retain three Indian players and one overseas player or two Indian players and two overseas players.

IPL 2022 Auction Live – Teams Updates
Reports suggest that the board has put forward six cities – Guwahati, Ranchi, Cuttack (all East), Ahmedabad (West), Lucknow (Central Zone), and Dharamsala (North) – as their options for the two new teams considering the zonal imbalance and business opportunities in mind.
The base price of the franchise is expected around INR 2,000 Crores while the party acquiring the team should have a net worth of INR 2500 Crores and a turnover of INR 3000 crore.
Moreover, a couple of stages will be involved in the bidding process. One is the legal one and the other being the financial stage. Initially, the legal stage will be cleared and BCCI will have a look at whether all the interested parties have their legal bases covered or not.
The financial bidding will follow the legal bidding in which the turnover, net worth, and all other bidding wars will be held.
“The Board is planning to have the bidding on 17th October and it will be an e-bidding,” sources in the know of things told PTI on Tuesday.
The BCCI had on August 31 invited bids to own an IPL franchise with “Invitation to Tender” available for purchase till October 5.
“The Governing Council of the IPL invites bids to acquire the right to own and operate 1 (one) of the 2 (two) new teams proposed to be introduced to take part in the Indian Premier League from the IPL 2022 season, through a tender process,” the BCCI had said in a statement.
“Any interested party wishing to submit a bid is required to purchase the ITT.
“However, only those satisfying the eligibility criteria set out in the ITT and subject to the other terms and conditions set out therein shall be eligible to bid. It is clarified that merely purchasing this ITT does not entitle any person to bid,” the cricket body had said.
How to Own an IPL 2022 Team?
The IPL governing council has floated tenders for the new teams and invited interested parties to apply for the bidding process to acquire the right to own and operate the teams that are proposed for inclusion in the IPL 2022 edition.
Any party interested in acquiring an IPL team will have to first purchase the ‘Invitation to Tender’ or ITT from the BCCI.
The ITT will be available to interested parties on receipt of payment of the non-refundable tender fee of INR 10,00,000 (Rupees Ten Lac Only) plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. All other terms contained in the Invitation document shall be applicable.
Apart from this BCCI made an official announcement regarding the IPL 2022 New team tender announcement.
Interested parties are requested to email at [email protected] to get further details for purchasing the ITT. The email requesting the ITT should have the subject line “ITT for the Right to Own and Operate One of Two Proposed New IPL Teams”.
Any interested party wishing to submit a bid is required to purchase the ITT. However, only those satisfying the eligibility criteria set out in the ITT and subject to the other terms and conditions set out therein, shall be eligible to bid. It is clarified that merely purchasing this ITT does not entitle any person to bid.
The BCCI reserves the right to cancel or amend the bidding process at any stage without providing any reason.
Why BCCI adds 2 Teams for IPL 2022 Auction?
The BCCI is aiming to take the cash-rich league to cities in the Hindi-speaking region more so in the north belt to keep the pan-India balance of the most popular franchise league in the world.
With Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad already representing three of the southern cities in the country, BCCI has now made it clear that no city from the south will be included anymore even though the likes of Vishakhapatnam and Kochi were in the fray, but the pending litigation with the ex-Kochi side (Kochi Tuskers Kerala) worked against them.
Also with 65 percent of the four billion minutes of viewership of the IPL coming from the Hindi region, the BCCI has gone the north, west, and eastern way.
Only Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are from the northern region as Rajasthan Royals based in Jaipur are considered from the central zone according to cricket mapping, which is why the board is expecting the IPL to expand beyond the capital city Delhi and Punjab in the north.
New Purse Value for IPL 2022 Auction
The franchises would deduct the salaries of these four players before entering the auction. With two new teams, the BCCI will also increase the purse from 85 crores to 90 crores which means an additional 50 crores would be added to the budget of all ten franchises by the BCCI.
In case if a franchise retains three players, Rs 15 cr, Rs 11 cr, and Rs 7 cr would be the salary structure of those players, Rs 12.5 cr and Rs 8.5 cr if two players are retained; and Rs 12.5 cr if only one player is retained.
“Some players may like the idea of not wanting to be retained and will want to head into the auction pool. That’s because there’s an increase in the salary purse and two new teams are being added. So, there’ll be a rush to grab talent. Expect some leading Indian cricketers to forward their names for the auction,” those tracking developments told.
