Right after the conclusion of IPL 2021, BCCI decides to add 2 new IPL teams for the IPL 2022. As a result, BCCI gets a whooping 12,690cr (1.7 Billion dollars) from the sale of 2 New IPL Teams.

CVC Capital and RP Sanjiv Goenka Group are the owners of the Ahmedabad and Lucknow Super Giants teams respectively.

Post the team auction to maintain a balance BCCI decides to host a mega auction event for the upcoming IPL 2022. IPL rules allow all existing 8 teams to retain a maximum of 4 players and allow 2 new teams to pick a maximum of 3 players ahead of IPL 2022 Mega Auction.

The IPL Player Registration closed on January 20th, 2022. A total of 1,214 players (896 Indian and 318 overseas players) have signed up to be part of the IPL 2022 Player Auction.

A total of 33 players have been retained/picked ahead of the auction. While the existing eight franchises have retained 27 players, the two new teams have picked three players each.

Among the registered players only 590 cricketers were shortlisted and will be named under the hammer during the two-day mega auction event.

Amongst 590 players who have registered for the auction,

  • 228 are capped players
  • 355 are uncapped players
  • 7 belong to Associate Nations

Notably, If every franchise were to have a maximum of 25 players in their squad, 217 players will be taken in the auction (of which up to 70 may be overseas players).

David Warner, the Player of the Tournament at the recent T20 World Cup, and his Australian team-mate Mitchell Marsh, who was the Player of the Match in the T20 WC 2021 final, are among 49 players who have listed their base price at the maximum of INR 2 crore (US$ 269,000 approx.) for the 2022 mega IPL auction.

When will IPL 2022 start? 

IPL 2022 schedule is expected to start on 02, April 2022. The IPL schedule is yet to be finalized from BCCI, we will have clear picture about the start of IPL 2022 and it’s possibility of opening ceremony for this season.

When will IPL 2022 end? 

The IPL 2022 is expected to end on 03, June 2022. Since there are 10 teams playing this IPL 2022, the matches and combination of double headers still needs a clear cloud from IPL officials.

Kane Williamson will be the first option for SRH in their IPL 2022 players retention. If SRH decides to build a strong bowling unit with Indian players then Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be the better options.

As far SRH is concerned their first retainment will be their skipper Kane Williamson, while they could not leave Rashid Khan on the other hand there might be hard bargain between the two parties.

Rashid Khan is unlikely to be retained by SRH as the Afghan spinner is not willing to be SRH’s second retained player ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. Notably, the difference between the two positions is INR 4 crore.

IPL 2022 Auction Date

  • The window for the 8 existing teams to retain the players will be from the 1st November 2021 to 30th November 2021.
  • The 2 new IPL teams will have the window to retain the players starting from 1st December 2021 to 25th December 2021.
  • Right after this retention window period, BCCI will organize the IPL 2022 Auction at the end of December or at the beginning of January 2022.

IPL 2022 Retention Rules

  • A team is set to be allowed to keep up to three Indian(capped/uncapped) and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four.
  • It has clearly said that a team cannot keep more than two uncapped players.
  • As per the conditions, the team management can either retain three Indian players and one overseas player or two Indian players and two overseas players.
  • Two New IPL teams can pick any 2 Indian and 1 foreign player from the Mega auction pool before the start of the auction 2022.
  • Also, new teams can pick only one uncapped player before the auction.
  • There will also be no Right to Match (RTM) cards for the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.
  • It has also been conveyed to the existing eight franchises that the two New IPL teams can pick any 3 players from the Mega auction pool before the start of the auction 2022.

IPL 2022 Salary Cap

BCCI also explained the salary cap for the retained players based on the team’s decision of the number of players retention.

  • If a team retains 4 players, Rs 42 crore will be cut from the player purse.
  • If a team retains 3 players, Rs 33 crore will be cut from the player purse.
  • If a team retains 2 players, Rs 24 crore will be cut from the player purse.
  • If a team retains only one player, it will lose Rs 14 crore from its purse value.
  • Each uncapped player retained will cost Rs 4 crore each.

If a team retains 4 of its player then the salary cap of the four players will be as follows:

If a team retains 3 of its player then the salary cap of the three players will be as follows:

Player 1 INR 15 Cr
Player 2 INR 11 Cr
Player 3 INR 7 Cr

 

If a team retains 2 of its player then the salary cap of the two players will be as follows:

Player 1 INR 14 Cr
Player 2 INR 10 Cr

 

If a team keeps only one player, then the team has to pay a total of INR 14 crores

1 Player deduction INR 14 Cr

 

IPL 2022 Points Table Rules

During the league stage, two points are awarded to a side for a win and one in case of a washout.

  • For a Win, the winning team gets 2 points
  • In case of match abandoned or ends abruptly or No Result, each team will be awarded 1 point.
  • In case of loss, the defeated team get 0 points

In the case of a tie, in the IPL score table, the following points will be taken into consideration.

  • Team with a higher number of points
  • If points are equal, the higher number of team wins will be considered
  • If still, the points are equal, the net run rate is seen
  • If still there is a tie, the team with the lower bowling strike rate will be considered
  • If still there is equality, it results in a head-to-head meeting.

IPL 2022 Rules

The IPL 2022 format is not something unfamiliar to the IPL cricket community. The format has been used in 2011 IPL where the tournament is played with a total of 10 teams.

  • The ten teams are divided into two groups of five.
  • A random draw was used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice.
  • In the group stage, each team plays 14 games facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times.
  • The team winning a match will be awarded 2 points. The losing team will not receive any points. In case of a draw or no result, both teams will be awarded 1 point.

IPL 2022 Playoff Formats

The first Qualifier will be played between the top two teams in the points table. The winner of qualifier 1 will bags the spot for the finals of the season.

The Eliminator is played between teams who finish at the third and fourth position in the points table. The winner of this match goes into Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 2: The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator play this game. The team winning this game moves into the final.

IPL Finals will be played between the winner of Qualifier 1 and the winner of Qualifier 2.
