The out break of corona virus made a huge impact globally. Many government advice and many imposed a total lock down globally. India too enroll it’s name in that list by imposing a lock down for 21 days.

Due to the rapid increase in spread, Indian government extend it’s lock down period till May 3. Due to this deadly and un expected virus spread many scheduled events has been postponed globally. BCCI too postponed it’s cash rich event Indian Premier League to April 15, but the lock down extent gets IPL execution in oscillation.

BCCI seeks it’s all possible way to host the 13th edition of IPL to prevent a huge lose.

IPL 2020 : BCCI is in Verge to Face a Huge Loss After Lock down Extend Amid Corona virus Pandemic

BCCI is in Verge to Face a Huge Loss if IPL 2020 cancelled due to corona virus spread

The world’s richest cricket body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), might be in big trouble if the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) is cancelled. How big? A massive ₹ 3,800 crores.

IPL 13 was postponed until April 14 as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, considering the lockdown might be extended, there would be serious question marks over the future of the league.

The BCCI office-bearers would be trying hard to push the tournament sometime later this year. But to chalk out a window for even a curtailed IPL would be no less than a herculean task considering 2020’s packed cricketing calendar.

If at all cancellation occurs due to unforeseen reasons, it will be a massive financial blow for the BCCI and all the IPL stakeholders. Not only that, but no IPL in 2020 will also mean a sizable dent in the Indian economy.

Star India would be amongst the biggest losers. The country’s leading broadcaster had shelled out a whopping ₹ 16,347.50 crores (the biggest television deal in the history of cricket) for the worldwide media rights for a 5-year period between 2018 and 2022.

A cancellation would translate into a direct loss of ₹ 3269.50 crores for Star. This at the back of a loss of ₹1216 crore loss it suffered in the previous financial year would be a massive blow.

The title sponsorship rights for IPL had also sold for a huge figure of ₹ 2,000 crores to Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo. A cancelled 2020 IPL means a loss of ₹ 400 crores for BCCI.

Add to that a loss of ₹ 200 crores from central sponsorship, and the combined figure reaches ₹ 3,869.50 crores.

While it is slightly early to comment on whether a cancellation will occur, it does give BCCI some important lessons. The biggest amongst them is to have an insurance policy in place to counter unforeseen situations like the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was being reported that Wimbledon, which got cancelled recently, had received $ 141 million in insurance money. Although it won’t entirely cover the $ 250 million in losses due to a scrapped season, it does soften the blow.

The out break of COVID-19 has made a huge impact on our day to day life. In order to control the spread many governments imposed a total lock down globally. Many scheduled events has been postponed due to this deadly corona virus.

The most awaited 13th edition of cash rich Indian Premier League too face the same fate. The tournament has been planned to start from March 29, due to the COVID fear BCCI postponed the IPL 2020 to the mid of April. As the Indian government extend the lock down the execution of IPL gets in oscillation.

Dhoni’s return

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was all set to be a trial ground for former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Although some felt he was well past his prime, head coach Ravi Shastri had pointed out that the IPL will decide whether Dhoni deserved a spot in the Indian team for the year-end’s 2020 T20 World Cup.

Dhoni, who last played for India during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, missed the West Indies tour (and all subsequent series) last year due to his training for the parachute regiment of the Indian Army in Kashmir valley.

Dhoni was subsequently in the news in January when his name wasn’t to be found in the list of annually contracted Indian players. It was widely anticipated that a stellar IPL season might open doors for Dhoni’s international comeback keeping eyes on the ICC T20 World Cup 2020.

Regards Indian former skipper MS Dhoni’s return many revealed their thoughts and plot the possibilities. Where Indian former player Sunil Gavaskar suggest Dhoni should retire silently and Sehwag advice team India to play with their current wicket keeper batsman.

Australian bowler Brad Hogg too predict the possibilities of MS Dhoni’s return to International squad if IPL 2020 cancelled.

VVS Laxman regards MS Dhoni’s return

Laxman said that Dhoni has a couple of IPLs left in him. “Not only this IPL, but he (Dhoni) will also probably play in the next couple of IPLs, and then we will take a call about his future as a cricketer,” Laxman said Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

Laxman also said, “I think, playing for CSK will keep him going because he’s supremely fit and age is just a number, and especially when someone like MS Dhoni is not only physically fit, but mentally very astute as a captain as a leader he enjoys leading the CSK franchise”.

“Dhoni will be very clear, as far as his plans are concerned, I’m sure he must have communicated that with (captain) Virat Kohli, (coach) Ravi Shastri immediately after the 2019 World Cup in England,” said Laxman.

“The new selection committee will have to sit down with MS Dhoni and understand his future, as far as Indian cricket is concerned. But MS Dhoni will continue to play for CSK and do well for CSK,” said Laxman.

Australia vs India : Nathan Lyon Gives Rahul Dravid’s Title to Another Indian Test batsman

India successfully defeats Australia during the 2018-19 test series and crown the un expected victory. India defeats the Australia when their star players Steve Smith and David Warner were out of team.

Now talking about the Test series which is to be played later in the year, Australia’s Nathan Lyon says that while all focus is on Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara is like the ‘new wall’.

Pujara was the star of the series the last time India toured Australia and the right-hander was sure to give a tough time to the Aussie bowling unit.

However, Lyon, who gave the batsman the title once given to Rahul Dravid, said he will not allow Pujara to fly under the radar. He added that the Australian bowling attack will have their plans in place for the new wall of India’s batting order.

“I think Pujara flies under the radar a little bit when you look at the Indian side,” Lyon was as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“Obviously you look at Rahane and Virat and these guys. But Pujara is a wall. He’s the new wall I should say. It helps that he played exceptionally well last time out here. He adapted his game. He had a bit of luck which is what you need when you’re playing at the top level.

“He obviously played his absolute backside off, which for India was good to see but we’re going to have to make sure that come this summer we have to come with some new plans to combat Pujara. As I said, he flies under the radar a little bit – he definitely won’t be flying under the radar come this summer,” he further added.

As for their clash, India and Australia are scheduled to play a four-match Test series later this year as part of the World Test Championship.

However, it is being speculated that the series might end up taking place without any crowds due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“If the IPL doesn’t happen, then Dhoni will have a difficult time” : Indian veteran K Srikkanth

However, as noted commentator Harsha Bhogle stated, the IPL’s uncertain future owing to the coronavirus pandemic has put serious question marks over Dhoni’s chances of making a dream return to cricket. Now, former Indian cricketer, K Srikkanth has also shown concerns over MS Dhoni’s future.

“I am not going to be diplomatic. I am talking about if I was the chairman of the selection committee, what would I do. If the IPL does not happen then his chances are very, very bleak. Because straightaway, in my opinion, KL Rahul will be the wicketkeeper-batsman. Rishabh Pant, I still think he might be a bit of a doubt, but I believe that Rishabh Pant is highly talented.”

Krishnamachari Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ talk show Cricket Connected.

“So, I wouldn’t mind taking him along with the squad, but definitely, if the IPL doesn’t happen, then Dhoni will have a difficult time getting back into the team for the T20 World Cup. Let’s be very honest about it. He is absolutely fit, he is a legend, he is brilliant. I am a great fan of Dhoni myself. But the question is for the World Cup team. So you’ll have to put the Indian team first and then the individuals.”

Earlier, IANS had quoted Shastri as saying that, “It all depends on when he starts playing and how he is playing during the IPL. What are the other people doing with the wicket-keeping gloves or what is the form of those players as opposed to Dhoni’s form? The IPL becomes a massive tournament because that could be the last tournament after which more or less your 15 is decided.

“There might be one player who might be there and thereabouts in case of an injury or whatever. But your team I would say would be known after the IPL. What I would say is rather than speculating on who is where wait for the IPL to get over and then you are in a position to take a call on who are the best 17 in the country.”

The outbreak of the novel COVID-19 pandemic had severely affected cricket tournaments last month. In addition to the tournaments which got canceled/delayed in March, Australia’s tour of Bangaldesh became the latest one to undergo postponement last week.

Originally scheduled to take place in June, the two-Test series doesn’t have a new start date. The last time Australia played a two-match Test series in Bangladesh, it ended in a 1-1 draw. Considering the past result, one could anticipate the hosts possessing a tough challenge to the visitors this time as well.

Opening up in an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Australia spinner Nathan Lyon expressed disappointment at not heading to Bangladesh next month and hoped to play cricket soon.

“Obviously it’s disappointing to not be heading over to Bangladesh. That was going to be a massive challenge for the team. It’s a place where I get personally challenged as well, and somewhere I enjoy playing my cricket. Regarding the scheduling, no doubt the ICC and Cricket Australia and all the big bosses will do everything they can to make sure we’re getting back and playing cricket,” Lyon was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

ICC World Test Championship also gets affected

The Bangladesh-Australia series is the first series of the ongoing ICC Test Championship which will get postponed due to the pandemic. If things don’t improve drastically in the near future, West Indies’ tour of England will also get affected.

In what is the inaugural season of the Championship, the delay in the matches will be duly affecting the future scheduling. “I think it’s important that the two best teams over that period compete in the Test Championship final, so obviously I want to be there. I want Australia to be there.

“I think we’re heading in the right direction, we’ve got a young side but we’re building towards something pretty special I believe. That’s a decision for the big bosses of the ICC and everyone else involved. We’ll just have to wait and see,” Lyon said with respect to the Test Championship.

Nathan Lyon pictures Virat Kohli playing sans crowd

Australia and New Zealand had played an ODI behind closed doors at the SCG last month before the series got postponed. Various reports suggest that the same might be the way ahead till the time normalcy is achieved.

It was only yesterday that Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell had spoken against playing ICC T20 World Cup 2020 without spectators. While Lyon wasn’t question about the showpiece event, he reckoned that India’s tour of Australia later in the year could be played without the crowd.

Being asked how India captain Virat Kohli would adjust to playing in an empty stadium, Lyon hailed him to be able to “adapt to any scenario” before revealing a conversation with fast bowler Mitchell Starc.

“He’s [Virat Kohli] probably good enough to adapt to any scenario. But it’s funny you say that. I was actually talking to Mitch [Mitchell] Starc the other day and we actually said that if we are playing with no crowd, it’ll be quite amazing to see Virat trying to rev up the seats. It’s going to be a little bit different. But Virat is a superstar. He’ll be able to adapt to any climate that we’re able to play in,” Lyon added.

“It is up there with the biggest series alongside the Ashes…”

During their last trip to Australia, India had registered their maiden Test series victory. With stellar batsmen in David Warner and Steve Smith back into the Australian side, the visitors will have a stern task ahead of them. Expressing excitement about playing against India, 32-year old Lyon believed the series to the biggest alongside the Ashes.

“I’m excited about the prospect of India coming out to Australia, it is up there with the biggest series alongside the Ashes. They’re an absolute powerhouse of the cricket world. Playing in front of crowds or no crowds is out of our control.

“We’ve got to follow the advice of all the amazing medical people around the world. I haven’t thought about no crowds or massive crowds – it’s just about the opportunity of playing against India again. They had the wood over us last time they came over here but we’re a much stronger side at the moment,” Lyon concluded.

The out break of deadly novel corona virus made every scheduled sports event to postpone. Thus in turn players steps in social media to get entertain as well as to entertain their fans.

Earlier Australian bowler Brad Hogg too predict the possibilities of MS Dhoni’s return to International squad if IPL 2020 cancelled. Where he also compares IPL and PSL and ranks them.

Brad Hogg points out India’s best fielder

Under the leadership of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, India transformed into one of the best fielding sides with the skipper Kohli himself being one of them. Then India also had veteran Suresh Raina, and one of the best Ravindra Jadeja.

So when former Australia spinner Brad Hogg was asked to choose India’s best ever fielder, he went on and chose Jadeja.

During the interaction of Twitter, Hogg was asked to choose between Kohli, Jadeja, Yuvraj, and Raina when it comes to fielding and Hogg replied – “All four are brilliant, would love to bowl having them all in the inner ring, but Jadeja for me. #hoggytime”.

Hogg was also questioned to rate who is a better off-spinner between R Ashwin and Nathan Lyon in Test cricket. Hogg believes Lyon has improved a lot in the last few years and that’s why he is better.

“I feel Lyon has taken the mantle from Ashwin over the last year just as the best off-spinner, but I love the way both continue to improve their games and not be complacent where they are at,” Hogg said.

IPL 2020 : BCCI Official Arun Dhumal gave an Update on 13th Edition of IPL that Postponed Amid Corona virus

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal has expressed his thoughts on whether the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) can be hosted later this year or not.

Due to the rapid spread of novel corona virus many scheduled events has been postponed. The most anticipated event of the year 2020 too face the same fate. The cash rich Indian Premier League has been postponed to mid of April.

BCCI’s previous announcement

Earlier BCCI scheduled to start the match from March 29, the out break of corona virus made this huge event to postpone. BCCI after discussing with IPL franchises comes out with a decision to host the IPL later.

But the postponed IPL date too get in oscillation when Indian government imposed a 21 day lock down nationally. BCCI seeks its all possible way to host the tournament as it would cost a huge loss to BCCI board.

IPL update

As the lockdown has been extend, hosting of this cash rich league gets in oscillation. According to Dhumal, it is still way too early to determine if the cash-rich tournament can be hosted later this year near October-November.

“Right now, the picture is very hazy. We don’t even know when the lockdown will end and if we don’t know, how can we even have a meaningful discussion.”

“Once we get clarity from the government, we can then sit and take fresh stock of the situation. Any speculation about its future will be premature,” Dhumal was quoted as saying by PTI.

Speaking on the current situation in the country amid COVID-19 outbreak, Dhumal stated: “Everyone wants IPL to happen but let’s have some clarity first. Our office-bearers are in constant touch. It’s not just IPL but there is a huge amount of pending administrative work, legal issues that need to be studied. But there was no conference call scheduled today as there is nothing to discuss till the current situation persists.”

The virus has brought all sports activities to a halt and players are practising social distancing and self-isolation during the pandemic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the governments all around are urging people to stay at home.

Reason for Australian Spinner Shane Warne Ban in 2003 ICC World Cup

With a lot of expectations going around in the 2003 WC, an unexpected incident happens where Shane Warne sentenced to a ban from the 2003 World Cup.

A fortnight before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 in South Africa, legendary Australia spinner Shane Warne had announced that he will call time on a decade-long ODI career after playing his third World Cup.

Having dismissed 291 batsmen in 193 ODIs at an average of 25.82, an economy rate of 4.25 and a strike rate of 36.4, Warne was Australia’s highest wicket-taker at the time he played his last ODI in January 2003. The illustrious spinner was the sixth-highest wicket-taker among all bowlers around the world in the format.

Shane Warne
Shane Warne

Representing the defending champions and also the favourites in the 2003 World Cup, one can say that Warne had picked the right time to hang his boots. With us knowing in the hindsight that Australia had won the World Cup, it would have been an “apt” time for Warne to leave one format.

Another reason behind the tournament being all the more special for Warne was that he had injured his shoulder in December 2002 while playing in an ODI against England and was facing a prospect of missing the World Cup. An exceptional five-week recovery saw the then 33-year old bowler take field in an international match in January.

Shane Warne 2003 ban

The fourth match of the tournament was Australia’s opener against Pakistan in Johannesburg. It was on the eve of the match that the Australian board had called for a press conference to announce that Warne was returning home due to failing a routine drug test.

Shane Warne

Warne had tested positive for consuming a diuretic known as Moduretic. In what was a prescription drug widely used in the treatment of hypertension, high blood pressure and fluid retention, it was banned for its possible usage as a masking agent for steroids by diluting traces of the substance in the urine. The drug was also commonly used to reduce weight by ridding the body of any excess fluids.

“For Warnie [Shane Warne], who’s been playing international cricket for a decade, to ignore that approach is madness,” the then Australian captain Ricky Ponting was quoted as saying a night before captaining Australia for the first time in a World Cup.

Reason for Warne’s Ban

Upon his return in Melbourne, Warne admitted to consuming a tablet given to him by his mother on January 22 to make sure that he looks good in front of the camera and that it had nothing to do with making any banned substance. “Contrary to speculation, taking it had nothing to do with the treatment for my shoulder injury or for masking any banned substance,” Warne said.

In his defence, Warne also mentioned that he did not read the ACB’s playing conditions and that him consuming such a table without knowing about its components was “a reckless act, totally disregarding the consequences”. Warne also hinted at the torn packaging not allowing him to read the list of ingredients.

Warne was subsequently banned for a year contrary to ACB’s directive of banning him for two years. It is said that the leniency was adopted after listening to Dr. Peter Harcourt’s advise.

“Much of Warne’s evidence on these issues was unsatisfactory and the committee does not accept he was entirely truthful in his responses to questions about his knowledge of the ACB anti-doping policy. Coupled with that is his vague, unsatisfactory and inconsistent evidence about the extent of using a Moduretic,” read the finding.

In reply to the verdict, Warne asserted that the penalty was “very harsh” and that he is “extremely disappointed”. After serving a one-year ban, Warne represented Victoria 2nd XI against Queensland at the Junction Oval before representing Australia in the following tour of Sri Lanka.

“I admitted to the hearing that I had taken a tablet in early December. I was doing a lot of wine promotions. I’d had a couple too many bottles of wine and had a few late nights. I took a fluid tablet then. It was to get rid of a double chin. The December test showed small traces of the same thing. That was before my [shoulder] operation. That proves I didn’t take the fluid tablet to mask anything,” Warne had said in his statement.

Apart from Ponting’s criticizing remarks, Warne was also censured by Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath and wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist. Chinaman spinner Brad Hogg had replaced Warne in the World Cup squad as the Aussies went on to lift their second consecutive title after beating India in the final match.

Post his comeback, Warne added to his tally of 193 ODIs by representing ICC World XI in a charity match against Asia XI. Other than that, Warne never got to play an ODI for Australia. At 37, Warne bid adieu to international cricket after the home Ashes in 2006-07.
