As per the World Cup 2023 schedule, South Africa will play their first game against Sri Lanka on October 7 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Ahead of the tournament, as of every other teams, South Africa too will play the warm-up games.

South Africa take on Afghanistan in their first warm-up fixture in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, before completing their preparations for the tournament against the Kiwis at the same Greenfield Stadium venue on 2 October.

In the absence of Temba Bavuma, T20I skipper Aiden Markram will lead the team in the World Cup 2023 warm-up games.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) released a statement on the development and confirmed Bavuma’s return to the side from the side’s tournament opener.

“Bavuma will miss the two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 warm-up matches against Afghanistan and New Zealand on 29 September and 02 October respectively. Aiden Markram will captain the side in his absence,” CSA said in a statement.

Bavuma already missed the penultimate game of South Africa’s recent 3-2 ODI series win at home against Australia. He has scored three centuries and a 90 in his last nine ODI innings, including a brilliant 114* in the opening game against Australia.

South Africa have already lost key pacers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala ahead of the tournament owing to injury.
