Ashton Agar Ruled Out of World Cup 2023 With Calf Injury

Australian left-arm spinner Ashton Agar has been ruled out of the upcoming Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in India owing to a calf injury.

Australia are expected to announce their final squad on Thursday (September 28), the deadline to announce the team. After September 28, teams will need permission from the ICC to make any changes to the squad.

According to a report in Fox Sports, Australia could make a number of changes to their preliminary World Cup squad after the injury setbacks.

The report further stated that Ashton Agar is set to miss the World Cup after failing to recover from the calf injury that ruled him out of the T20I series against South Africa earlier this month.

Ashton Agar was named in Australia’s provisional World Cup squad earlier this month and returned home after one match against the Proteas for the birth of his first child, subsequently missing this week’s ODI series against India.

However, the left-arm tweaker is not expected to join the Australian white-ball squad in India, with Tanveer Sangha looming as his potential replacement, along with Marnus Labuschagne and Matthew Short.

Australia is expected to announce its finalised 15-player World Cup squad on September 28 afternoon. The Australians have now lost back-to-back ODI series against South Africa and India ahead of the World Cup.

“I must say I’m pretty happy to bowl in the night than in the heat. Both have not played a lot, Maxwell’s four-fer and Starcy looked in great rhythm. Travis Head won’t be fit for the start of the tournament. Ash Agar is back home with a calf injury and Head won’t be fit for the next couple of weeks. Happy as it was the first hit where we have had almost a full-strength team,” Cummins confirmed.

As per the Australia World Cup 2023 Schedule, they will play their first game of the tournament against India at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, October 8.
