Afghanistan has announced a strong 15-member squad for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next month in India.
Afghanistan Squad for World Cup 2023
As per the Afghanistan World Cup 2023 Schedule, the team will play their first game of the tournament against Bangladesh on October 7 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala.
Naveen-ul-Haq returns to the Afghanistan ODI squad after a two-year gap for the World Cup in India while senior all-rounder Gulbadin Naib misses out despite a good showing in the ongoing Asia Cup.
Gulbadin Naib, Riaz Hassan, Karim Janat, Sharafuddin Ashraf and Mohammad Saleem Safi, who were part of the Afghanistan Asia Cup squad, were the ones to miss out on the World Cup selection. Among them, Naib and Ashraf are the travelling reserves for the World Cup, along with Farid Ahmad Malik.
Afghanistan were knocked out early from the Asia Cup after losing their matches to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. They did run Sri Lanka very close in a chase of 292 but missed out as head coach Jonathan Trott blamed it on the miscommunication of the NRR (net run-rate) calculations.
