World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios: Though a total of 10 teams participate in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, only one team will be crowned as the WINNER of the tournament.
The path to the tournament’s final game is not as easy as one thinks. The teams have to exhibit an extraordinary performance throughout the tournament to gain their pass to the Grand Final game.
Out of 10 teams, only four teams will enter the semifinal round where the winners of Semifinal 1 and Semifinal 2 will advance to the Final game. The four teams will be decided based on the team’s performance in the group stage.
The top 4 teams of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 Points Table will qualify to play the semifinal round. It’s not an easy task to enter the top 4 positions in the points table. Each team will give their best in every group match to make a lead in the points table race.
Apart from the victories, Net Run Rate(NRR) will also play a role in the semifinal qualification. In this section, we will discuss “ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios” for all teams.

ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios: In the last Men’s ODI World Cup(2019), teams with minimum 5 victories entered the semifinal round. Though New Zealand and Pakistan shared the same points, New Zealand advanced to the semifinals based on the NRR.

India Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams: Though Rohit Sharma and Co have managed to register 6 victories in their first 6 games, India has not officially confirmed a place in the semifinals.
This is because both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have bagged four points in five games they played so far. The scenario means both of them can catch India and finish with 12 points if India loses all their remaining 3 matches.
Following the Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan match result, the winner of the game will stay alive in the race to catch India in the points table.
India can finalise their spot in the semifinal round if they manage to score one point in the following three games or if Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are washed out in their next three games.

England Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams: The defending champions England faces one of their worst nightmare in this ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. With only one victory in their first 6 games, they need to win all their remaining 3 games and need to depend on how other teams perform.
England needs to win all three remaining games with a high NRR to increase their chance of a semifinal spot.
A victory against Australia would take England to four points and give them an outside chance of qualification with games to come against the Netherlands on November 8 and Pakistan on November 11, although Buttler’s side will still need a dramatic improvement to their current net run rate of -1.652.
If England wins all their remaining three games, they cannot surpass either India or South Africa’s tally on the points table but can equal the points tally of New Zealand and Australia.
England can still qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal if they win all their remaining three games and either or both New Zealand or Australia lose all their remaining three matches.
If it happens so, England, Australia and New Zealand all will have the same points. In that scenario, the team with better NRR will advance to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal.
Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Netherlands can also finish with a higher points tally than England if any of the teams win all their remaining matches. England will need all those teams to lose at least one match each and England need to finish with a better NRR to increase their semifinal chances.

Australia Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams: Australia played 6 matches so far and won 4 games out of them. A win against England will also mean the end of the title defence for their Ashes rivals. If they lose to England, they can still progress with wins over Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
A failure to win two of their three matches could leave them depending on NRR, which is still healthy when compared to the teams outside the top four, to book a semifinal spot.
If Australia and New Zealand manage to win two of their three matches, they are likely to join India and South Africa, who also need at least a win to confirm their spots, in the semifinals.
Following are the details of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 Australia Matches:

Pakistan Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams: Pakistan who won only 2 games out of their first 6 matches, need to win all their remaining games.
Pakistan will need to defeat Bangladesh, New Zealand and England in their remaining three matches, and also hope Australia lose their remaining fixtures to have a good chance of qualifying for the semifinals. But a defeat in one of their matches will end their chances.

New Zealand Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams: To be sure of a semi-final spot New Zealand need to win their remaining three group games. New Zealand lost their second game on a trot but still sits in the third position in the points table.
They have four victories in six matches, but the last two defeats have made things stiff for them. Their qualification will be possible only if they win at least two more matches and reach 12 points.
However, the Kiwis have some difficult opponents lined up in the next three matches. They have to defeat at least two among South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Proteas are in form and will be hard to beat.
Meanwhile, Pakistan will play without any fear since they don’t have much to lose now. Sri Lanka have hit their form and won’t be pushovers. The Blackcaps will need to win two more matches, or else all the hard work in the initial phase will be undone, and they will be at risk of elimination.

- Thu, 09 November – New Zealand vs Sri Lanka
Afghanistan Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios: To make the semi-finals they need at least one win from their three games, but that requires Australia and New Zealand to lose their remaining matches and to improve their net run-rate.
However, Afghanistan can eye a semifinal spot now. They have the Netherlands in their next match. While they are not easy to beat, Afghanistan will fancy their chances to defeat them.
However, the games against Australia and South Africa in the last phase won’t be easy. But they should definitely beat the other two teams and make it interesting.
Following are the details of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 Afghanistan Matches:
- Sat, 07 October – Bangladesh vs Afghanistan
- Wed, 11 October – India vs Afghanistan
- Sun, 15 October – England vs Afghanistan

Netherlands Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios: The Netherlands who just won 2 out of their first 6 games can still qualify for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 semifinal if they win all their remaining games. The Netherlands have won two games in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 edition and holds the 8th spot in the points table.
If the Netherlands can win all their remaining 3 games, they can register a maximum of 5 wins in their ODI World Cup.
- If the Netherlands wins all their 3 remaining games, then teams like India, England and Afghanistan will lose one game each.
- Pakistan should lose one more game in their remaining 3 games. Pakistan should lose one more game against either Bangladesh (or) England respectively and it will be better if Pakistan beats New Zealand.
- Sri Lanka should lose two more games in their remaining schedule. It will be better if Sri Lanka loses their matches against India and Bangladesh while they can defeat sides like Afghanistan and New Zealand respectively.
- Afghanistan should lose two more games in their remaining schedule. As per the above statements, Afghanistan will lose to both Sri Lanka and the Netherlands hence they will stand below the Netherlands in the table.
- New Zealand (or) Australia should lose all their remaining games in the tournament. As per the above statements, New Zealand will lose to Pakistan and Sri Lanka already. New Zealand should also lose another game against South Africa to stand at just 4 wins in the points table.
- Australia will play their remaining games against sides like England, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Australia should lose all these three games if New Zealand manages to win against South Africa.
- Bangladesh already have five losses in the tournament, hence they will stand below the Netherlands in the points table.
- England already have four losses in the tournament and if they lose to Netherlands then they will also have five losses and stand below the Netherlands in the points table.
- If all these happen then the Netherlands can qualify for the semi-finals of ODI WC 2023 with five wins in the table by going past six sides like Bangladesh, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Newland/Australia.

South Africa Semifinal Qualification Scenario
ODI World Cup 2023 Semi Final Teams Qualification Scenarios: With 5 victories in 6 games, South Africa holds the second spot in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 point stable. A couple of wins in their next 3 games will confirm their semifinal spot.
Even if they manage to win one more match in the remaining three, South Africa can clinch a spot in the semifinal, but that will depend on the results of the other seven teams in the points table, especially teams from 5th to 8th.
If South Africa beats New Zealand, they blow the third and fourth spot race wide open. In doing so, the Proteas will be assured of a top-three finish as well. Despite their defeat to the Netherlands, South Africa is the next best-placed team after India in the semifinal race.
Following are the details of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 South Africa Matches:

Sri Lanka Semifinal Qualification Scenario
