The upcoming tour will also be the first assignment of newly appointed head coach Chris Silverwood, who will now be joined by Nawaz as an assistant coach, Chaminda Vass as a fast bowling coach, Piyal Wijetunge as a spin bowling coach, and Manoj Abeywickrama as the national team’s fielding and support coach.

Nawaz played one Test and three ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1998 and 2002. He was previously serving as Bangladesh U-19 team coach and had guided the team to the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup glory in 2020.

Sri Lanka in their upcoming tour against Bangladesh will play two Test matches. The first Test will begin on 15 May in Chattogram, followed by the second Test in Dhaka which starts on 23 May.

Sri Lanka are coming off a series defeat against India, losing both Tests and the limited-overs series, while Bangladesh are coming off a historic ODI series win in South Africa. However, they lost the Test series to the Proteas but will fancy their chances at home against Sri Lanka.

The two Tests between the nations will also be part of the World Test Championship cycle 2021-23. Currently, Sri Lanka are placed fifth in the World Test Championship points table while Bangladesh are just one above the bottom-placed England side, at the eighth position.
