Morne Morkel Resigns as Pakistan Bowling Coach

Following a dreadful World Cup campaign in India, Morne Morkel resigns as Pakistan bowling coach. In the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan managed to register only 4 wins in their 9 group matches and failed to qualify for the semifinal round.

Morne Morkel Resigns as Pakistan Bowling Coach: The former South Africa fast bowler joined the Pakistan team on a six-month contract in June this year. Morkel’s first assignment with the men’s team was their tour to Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series.

Though Pakistan kick-started their World Cup 2023 campaign with a couple of victories, they failed to maintain consistency and lost 4 consecutive games including their match against India.

Following a 7-wicket loss against India, Pakistan lost their next three games against Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa. Pakistan managed to win their next 2 games against Bangladesh and New Zealand by 7 wickets and 21 runs respectively.

Pakistan played their last group match of the tournament under an impossible qualification scenario against England and lost the game by 93 runs.

PCB hasn’t named Morkel’s replacement and stated in their release that a call on the same will be taken “in due course”. Next up, Pakistan are scheduled for a tour of Australia in December that’ll see them play in a three-Test series.

It was the fifth straight time at the ODI World Cup that Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals.

Former World Cup winner and legendary seamer Wasim Akram attributed the poor performance of the team to the pacers not being able to show up. “The problem for Pakistan in this WC is that our fast bowling is struggling,” he’d said.

Pakistan’s next assignment is a three-match Test series against Australia scheduled to take place from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024, in Australia.
