Karun Nair joins Northamptonshire for the County Championship
Karun Nair arrived in the UK on Friday after signing a contract with Northamptonshire to play the final three matches in the County Championship.
Previously, an Indian batter Prithvi Shaw had signed the franchise and made a sensational knock of 244 runs on 153 balls against Somerset. He was then sidelined and returned to India after his knee injury in the match against Durham.
Nair will link up with the squad before the match against Warwickshire starting on Sunday. While asked about his presence for the county championship he said, “I’m really looking forward to joining Northamptonshire and getting to play in the County Championship.” Nair said in a statement.
“You hear a lot about county cricket and I know Prithvi [Shaw] really enjoyed his time with the team so it’s exciting to have the opportunity to be involved too. Hopefully, I can make an impact on the team while I’m there, that’s the main thing for me. It’s about doing as much as I can to help the team get some wins in these last three games.”
Karun Nair made his Test debut in 2016 against England and became the second Indian player to score a triple century after Virender Sehwag.
He was also part of India’s BGT trophy squad and made his last Test match appearance in Dharamsala in March making 374 runs in six Test appearances.
He had compiled around 6,000 runs across 85 appearances in first class with an average of 48.94 and has 15 centuries.
While asked about the signing of Karun Nair for Northamptonshire, the head coach John Sadler said, “It’s great that we’ve been able to secure Karun to come over for the remainder of the season, he’s really keen to get going.”
“He’s a high-class batter who’s scored something like 11,000 runs in his career and his first-class numbers are particularly special. He brings buckets of experience too which is so valuable to have around the dressing room, I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do for us in these three games.”
“Hopefully, I can make an impact on the team while I’m there, that’s the main thing for me. It’s about doing as much as I can to help the team get some wins in these last three games,” he concluded.
Northamptonshire will be facing Warwickshire in the County Championship on September 10 at Edgbaston.
