Apart from other shocking selections for the T20 World Cup 2024 squad, Rinku Singh’s exclusion from the team created controversy among the cricket community. He found a place only in the reserves alongside Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan.
Everyone expected Rinku Singh to be included in the squad who is a hard hitter down in the order. Everyone knows his capabilities as a finisher. In the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024, Rinku scored 123 runs at a strike rate of 150.
Rinku can be used as an aggressive batter who has the capability of smashing boundaries in the death overs which is essential in a T20 format game.
During the official press meet involving Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar, the exact reason was revealed. During the same press conference, Agarkar revealed the reason behind sidelining KL Rahul from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
“He has done nothing wrong, even Shubman Gill. There are a couple of wrist-spinners in the team to give rohit more options. Similar case for Axar who is a batting all-rounder. We thought to have another bowling option might be handy. It was tough on him, but at the end of the day we had to pick the team”, Agarkar on Rinku Singh.
Speaking of the tournament, as per the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 schedule, India will play their first match of the tournament against Ireland on June 5 in Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.
