Kohli’s celebration went wrong
Indian captain Virat Kohli on Monday, March 2 got annoyed after being asked about his animated celebrations over Kane Williamson’s dismissal on day two of the second Test before clarifying that match referee Ranjan Madugalle had no issues with what happened.
However, when Williamson was asked about the incident, New Zealand captain downplayed the incident, saying it was “typical of Virat, who plays the game with lot of passion”.
New Zealand beats India by seven wickets and lifts the trophy for the test series by whitewashing India. In the second innings of the test match Indian batsmen failed to score runs. None of the player scored above 30 runs that cause the major fall for the India.
@imVkohli is Modi of Cricket.
What he did was very disgraceful.
Where is @ICC who awarded him for spirit of game award?
“What do you think? I am asking you the answer,” the irritation was writ large on Indian skipper’s face as he came up with a sharp retort.
“You need to find out an answer and come up with a better question. You can’t come here with half questions and half details of what happened. Also if you want to create controversy, this is not the right place. I spoke with the match referee (Madugalle) and he had no issues with what happened,” said Kohli.
When Williamson was asked about Kohli’s celebrations, he simply laughed it off.
“It is Virat and he is passionate about the field. I don’t think we need to read too much into it,” Williamson told PTI.

Jadeja took an Unbelievable catch in the second test match against New Zealand. Kyle Jamieson and Neil Wagner stand strong and shared a 51-run partnership for the ninth wicket before Jadeja took a stunning catch at deep square leg.
Shami bowled a bouncer from around the stumps to Wagner, who pulled it in the air towards deep square-leg. Jadeja, who was stationed there but standing well inside the boundary line, leapt in the air and put his left hand out and fortunately for him, the ball stuck as he came tumbling down but managed to hold on to the catch.
Wagner was stunned by what he saw as Jadeja himself looked at the replay of the catch on the big screen, marveling at his own superhuman effort.
The all-rounder was immediately surrounded by his teammates as all of them basked in his fielding brilliance. The effort left Wagner flabbergasted too. At tea, Jadeja said he was expecting Neil Wagner to score heavily in the square leg region, but never thought the ball would come at that pace.
Shami then got rid of Kyle Jamieson on 49 as India managed to earn a slender lead of 7 runs at the end of the first innings. The Test match is now pretty open and much will depend on how the Indian batting responds on a pitch which has become quicker and has enough assistance to keep New Zealand interested.
Jadeja’s comment on catch
“I was expecting him (Wagner) to score towards deep square leg. But I didn’t expect the ball to come at that pace. It came so quickly with the wind and I just stuck my hand out. I didn’t even realise when I took the catch. We bowled well as a unit. We will look to bat well and bowl them out again,” Jadeja told the host broadcasters immediately after the innings.

Player of the Match
Radha Yadav(India)
Bowling : 4 wickets for 23 runs in four overs
Radha Yadav : I was just thinking of bowling stump to stump and tried to keep it simple. We did well as a bowling unit. And we need to keep this momentum going forward. Yeah, she’s (Poonam) a legend.
Captain’s view
Harmanpreet Kaur: It’s really important to keep the momentum when you are winning games. You really work hard, so you can’t afford to lose that momentum. You can’t bowl same pace and lengths on these wickets, so you need to keep rotating the bowlers. Today I tried to be positive and got a few boundaries. In the upcoming games I’ll try to give my best. Shafali is someone who loves to play big shots, and we don’t want to stop her. She should continue doing the same and she should continue enjoying her game.
Chamari Athapaththu: I think it wasn’t a enough score to defend on this wicket. We dropped a few chances, especially that of Shafali. I gave a good start, but unfortunately I got out. If I would have stayed there, we might have scored 150-plus. We’ll try to play positive cricket and play to our potential against Bangladesh.

Virat Kohli | India captain: We would have bowled first. We are ready for doing the other thing, the difficult things in Tests, especially in conditions that are not your own. Umesh comes in for Ishant, Jadeja for Ashwin – gives us more with the bat, and his accuracy as well. As batsmen we need to figure out how to score runs. That’s upto the individuals to score runs, and it’s all about executing that out here. We aren’t here to show that we can play in these conditions. We have done it before, and we just need to execute everything properly.
Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain: We’ll have a bowl. Some similarities – the Basin has green tinge too. Wagner in for Ajaz Patel. We came here, looked at the surface, and its history and figured all-pace was the way to go. There should be pace and bounce, so there’s ample opportunity for us to score as well after it hardens up.

India struggled to break this partnership as they were very near to the victory with handful of wickets. New Zealand opening partnership leads Kiwi’s to cross ton without any wicket loss. Finally U Yadav dismissed Latham for 52 runs but no of the Indian players seems very much happy as Kiwi’s were just 29 runs away from their victory.

The Whitewash series
The way New Zealand have flipped this, is quite surreal. They were tortured over the last few months, rubbing salt into the super-over wounds – against England, and twice in a row against India. Add to that the predicament of a 0-5 loss at home, and rockbottom had been redefined. And then it began: 0-3 in the ODIs, when the ghosts of the World Cup semi-final came back to haunt India, and they never recovered: they were tactically, technically outdone in the Test matches. Not to mention the serious lack of character from the batting, and the sporadic bursts of penetration from the bowling unit. It’s simply not good enough.
Player of the Match
Kyle Jamieson(New Zealand)
It’s been pretty surreal couple of weeks, just to be part of the group and win a couple of matches feels good. Pitch conditions obviously help and trying to find the fuller length and making decisions more often about the length and sometimes natural variations take over. It’s certainly time that I work on a lot on my batting, especially batting lower down the order and in both tests the partnerships down the order have made a difference. Having had a small taste of Test cricket, it’s important to work on things and come back better.
Player of the Series
Tim Southee for taking 14 wickets in total
Captain’s view
Virat Kohli | India captain (1/2): I think it was a matter of not having enough intent in the first game. We played well in the first innings here with the bat. We also need to give credit to the New Zealand bowlers, they bowled in the right areas long enough, created a lot of pressure. There were hardly any opportunities, that meant you have to play extravagant shots for runs than just keep rotating strike. It was a combination of us not having the right kind of execution and New Zealand playing well. The consistency of their bowling was outstanding, forced us to do mistakes. We are usually a batting side that fights. Batsmen didn’t do enough for the bowlers to attack. It’s disappointing as a side when the batsmen don’t back up the effort of the bowlers. To win series and matches outside home you need to have a balanced performance with bat and ball and in the field – take those chances as well. We need to go back, understand what went wrong and correct those things moving forward.
Virat Kohli (2/2): We are not a side that thinks about the result of the toss. Yes it did give a bit of extra advantage to the bowlers in the first two hours of each Test, but as an international side playing so well over two, three seasons, you are expected to go out and execute in those conditions. We were not able to do that this time. We are not going to take excuses from this tour, just the learning and the mistakes we committed and try and improve as we move forward. T20s were pretty good. In the ODIs it was good to see the youngsters stepping up with Rohit not being available and me not getting runs. Those are a few positives, but as a Test team we were not able to play the kind of cricket we wanted to. We need to accept we were not good enough, take it on the chin and improve those things.
Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain: Outstanding feeling. Fairly sporting surfaces in both Tests. Bowlers had to put it in the right areas, but this pitch played well on all the days, even though history suggests it flattens out after doing a bit initially. I think therein lies the value of the 30-40 run partnerships. I don’t think the end result shows how tight that match was. We saw how many times the ball beat the bat. A fantastic series from outside and the way the guys stuck in. India are a world-class side and to beat them is quite satisfying. Jamieson’s a very exciting talent, and contributed incredibly well with both bat and ball in both games. He’s tall and gets bounce which is very helpful in these conditions. The runs he scored in the backend of both games were very valuable. Great progress for him. The guys had to be disciplined, and the wicket was doing enough, but the fast outfields did allow runs, and it was important to hang in there. A few heavy learning curves, a few good bits in this summer, but these are all part of it. You’re always trying to improve and the two games here have been opportunities to learn too.
Toss : New Zealand Women won the toss and opt to bat
Captain’s view
Salma Khatun: Wicket is good for bowling I think and our bowlers need to hit the good line and length. New Zealand are a very good team and we are hoping to do better from the last game. We have made a few changes, four of them.
Sophie Devine: We are gonna have a bat first today. Disappointed to lose the last game, but that’s how it goes in this format of the game and we have taken a lot of positives from that. All focus is on Bangladesh today, we know we have got a job to do.
New Zealand Women (Playing XI): Rachel Priest(w), Sophie Devine(c), Suzie Bates, Maddy Green, Katey Martin, Amelia Kerr, Hayley Jensen, Anna Peterson, Leigh Kasperek, Lea Tahuhu, Rosemary Mair
New Zealand batting
Steady opening from White Ferns
After losing the match against India, New Zealand steps into their third match in the tournament. Devine and Priest gets in crease, Devine is on strike. Panna Ghosh opens the attack against New Zealand. The New Zealand openers strikes the ball in a controlled form made a score of 33 runs without any wicket loss after power play ends.
Bangladesh seeks to break this well settled partnership to avoid New Zealand from scoring further. In the next over of the power play Salma Khatun uproots Devine and execute the break through needed by Bangladesh. The big fish Devine has been sent to pavilion when Fahima Khatun caught the ball. Suzie Bates then joins hand with the opener.
New Zealand collapsed by frequent wicket loss
This time it’s Salma Khatun who dismissed Priest with a LBW. Priest return pabilion with a score of 25 runs from 32 balls. After 10 overs New Zealand scored 55 runs for two wicket loss where Maddy Green scored 4 runs while Bates scored 11 runs.
New Zealand players struggled to face Bangladesh bowling that makes lags Kiwis from scoring further. Ritu Moni uproots Bates in 12th over for 15 runs from 14 balls. In the very next over Rumana Ahmed took two consecutive wickets that shocked New Zealand players. Maddy Green dismissed for 11 runs whereas Katey Martin dismissed for two runs. New Zealand collapsed as they lose five wickets for 68 runs.
Ritu Moni’s spell
In the next over Katey Martin too lose her wicket to Ritu Moni and return pavilion for 6 runs. New Zealand’s middle order failed to show up as a result New Zealand stand without reaching their ton even after 16 overs. Again Ritu Mon with her bowling spell picked a couple of wickets in her last over. This time it’s Anna Peterson who dismissed for 5 runs and Amelia Kerr for same 5 runs.
Soon New Zealand lose all their wickets for just 91 runs with more than an over left. Ritu Moni’s aggressive bowling that uproots four wicket in total helps Bangladesh to restrict New Zealand from scoring high even to a triple digit.
Over view
New Zealand have been bundled out for a paltry score of 91 by Bangladesh Women at the Junction Oval. Ritu Moni is not able to express her feelings in words as she’s been interviewed along the side lines. She’s just too exited! Was a brilliant effort by her as she claimed four crucial wickets. Salma Khatun – the captain bagged three wickets and it was mainly due to their effort that Bangladesh managed to restrict the White Ferns below a score of 100.
Bangladesh Batting
In order to prevent a hat-trick loss Bangladesh have to chase this score which is less than a run from a ball. Murshida Khatun and Ayasha Rahman gets in crease, Murshida Khatun is on strike. Kasperek opens the attack against Bangladesh. The pressure builds over New Zealand when Tahuhu spell four wides with a catch drop by Kerr in the same over.
Break through from Kasperek
But Kasperek in her second over picks the first wicket by dismissing Murshida Khatun for 11 runs. Peterson completes an easy catch and that’s the wicket New Zealand were looking for. Ritu Moni who impressed everyone with her bowling gets into batting platform and joins with Ayasha Rahman.
After power play
Hayley Jensen in the fourth over uproot Hayley Jensen for single run while she faced 8 balls. That clearly shows the Kiwis bowling performance. At the end of power play Bangladesh scored 23 runs for 2 wicket loss. New Zealand lose their review when appealed for Ritu Moni’s LBW.
Bangladesh struggle to score
Fargana Hoque returned pavilion by run out without scoring any facing three balls from Anna Peterson. Bangladesh struggled and were in under pressure as they scored only 31 runs with three wicket loss after 10 over completion. New Zealand bowlers takes the control over their bowling and restrict Bangladesh from chasing the modest target.
Rumana Ahmed lose her wicket to Anna Peterson and returns to dressing room while scoring 10 runs from 22 balls. In the very next over Rumana Ahmed dismissed by an LBW from Hayley Jensen’s delivery. Bangladesh lose 5 wickets in total by scoring 40 runs in total whereas New Zealand scored 68 runs.
Three wickets in three consecutive overs
Bangladesh lose three wickets in three consecutive overs. Sobhana Mostary dismissed by Devine in the 14th over. Jahanara Alam dismissed in the first ball of the next over bowled by Amelia Kerr. Fahima Khatun uprooted by Hayley Jensen in the 16th over that makes three wickets in three consecutive overs. Bangladesh scored 57 uns for eight wicket lose.
Bangladesh is in need of some miracle strikes from their lower order players to register their maiden win in this World cup tournament. Finally Bangladesh were fold up for 74 runs and New Zealand registered their second victory in the tournament. Despite a poor outing with the bat, the White Ferns scraped a win in this low-scoring encounter.
Over view
At the halfway stage, Bangladesh were the happier side. But, the White Ferns have defended 91 with ease. The Asian side lost both their openers in the powerplay and were never able to accelerate on this slow pitch. There were many factors involved – tight bowling, good fielding, miscommunication between the batters and poor strokes. All in all, the Bangladeshi batters couldn’t handle the pressure that was exerted by New Zealand. Just five bowlers were used with Kasperek and Jensen scalping three wickets apiece.
Just 91 on the board to defend, but the New Zealand bowlers have done it!
Although Bangladesh made a fight of it, they couldn’t get over the line. #T20WorldCup | #NZvBAN
Hayley Jensen : We know we scraped through to the last ball, but it was really a good bowling performance by us. I tried to keep it simple – hit the seam and bowl stump-to-stump. We know we have done the good work, we just need to train well and need to come out confident for the next match.
Sophie Devine | New Zealand captain: Nowhere near what we wanted to post. Bangladesh were fantastic, they put us under pressure on a very difficult wicket. The girls were brilliant. Jensen was fantastic and the spinners were great on a really hard wicket. We learnt from the Bangladesh bowlers, their seamers bowled straight and made us make mistakes. (When asked what will be the key against Australia) Probably batting a bit better than we did today. We have played a lot of cricket with and against them. We are really looking forward to it. It’s gonna be a big one.
Salman Kahtun | Bangladesh captain: We bowled and fielded well, but our batting wasn’t good. Ritu Moni bowled very good and picked four wickets. We need to improve our batting.
Indians may be excited to host Donald Trump on his maiden two-day visit to India. But no one gets away with messing with God of Cricket when in India, albeit inadvertently. Not even the President of the United States.
On the first leg of his maiden visit to India, Trump addressed a crowd of thousands in Ahmedabad’s Motera cricket stadium at the “Namaste Trump” rally held in the POTUS’s honour.
Both heads of states PM Narendra Modi and Trump addressed the cheering crowd at the stadium. But while Modi kept his words short and handed the stage over to the guest of honour, it was Trump’s speech, or rather, his accent when he pronounced Desi words, that caught a lot of ears.
Within minutes of his speech, which was liberally filled with Indian references such as DDLJ, Sholay, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, among others, videos of his mispronunciations went viral. And the worst of it came when he names Sachin Tendulkar. While Sachin is one of the easier Indian names when it comes to pronunciation, it seemed to be too much for Trump who pronounced the cricketer’s name as “Soo-chin Tendulkaar” during his address.
“This is the country where your people cheer on the biggest cricketers, from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli, the best in the world”, Trump said in praise of the star Indian cricketers.
Even ICC joined and trolled Trump for his action. As Trump mis-pounced one of the Indian favorite cricketer’s name social media gets into troll Trump for his action. Other netizens also took Twitter to troll the POTUS with many surmising that Trump was probably not a cricket fan after all. While Twitter likes to have it’s fun, it’s not really our place to make fun of people for incorrect pronunciations, especially when Indians themselves often face the brunt of such discrimination when speaking at world forums.
Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma who recently recovered from ankle injury, seems to ruled out from the second test match. India already lose the first test match against New Zealand and in need to win the second test match to equal the series. It’s a massive blow for India who tries to equal the series.
Ishant Sharma did bowl for a while two days out from the match on Thursday (February 27). He however, was absent from training on the eve of the match. According to a source, Ishant had informed the team management of pain in the same ankle after bowling for nearly 20 minutes in the nets on Thursday. He was sent for tests on Friday (February 28), results for which are still awaited, but there are indications that the injury flare-up could rule Ishant out for a long time, putting even his IPL participation with Delhi Capitals into doubt.
Umesh Yadav set in
It seems Umesh Yadav has been replaced for Ishant as head coach Ravi Shastri and bowling coach Bharat Arun were spotted having a lengthy chat with Umesh on the sidelines of the nets session. Where the Indian seemers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were absent either. The two however, had bowled lengthy spells the previous morning at the Hagley Oval nets.
Ishant’s 300 test wicket-postponed
As Ishant Sharma has been ruled out from the second test match his upcoming achievement of 300 wickets in test match has been postponed. The Indian team not surprisingly is learnt to have left the decision to rule Ishant out till as late as possible. But it looks very likely now that he will sit it out as they don’t want to take the risk of playing him and then losing a specialist bowler midway through the game.
Ashwin “OUT’ Jadeja “IN”
After losing the test in Wellington India decide to drag in Jadeja instead for Ashwin to perform in batting too. Ashwin who don’t shine well in the first test match has been ruled out of the second test match against New Zealand.
This is the first test match for Umesh in New Zealand and has of late played most of his Tests on home soil. Umesh had a rather successful home summer, where he played mostly in place of the injured Bumrah, with 23 wickets at 13.65 in 4 Tests. He last appeared in an away Test at the Perth Stadium in December 2018, when India played four fast bowlers.
Toss : Pakistan Women won the toss and opt to bowl
Captain’s talk
Heather Knight: We are going to bat first. The wicket looks a bit slowm so we would like to put the runs on the board and defend it later. They (Pakistan) proved a lot the last time we played against them. We are playing the same team.
Bismah Maroof: We are bowling first. I think it’s a good wicket, the ball was coming nicely under lights in the last game, so we will bowl first. We need to put them under pressure and stick on our strengths. Last game gave us a lot of belief. One change for us.
England Women (Playing XI): Amy Ellen Jones(w), Danielle Wyatt, Natalie Sciver, Heather Knight(c), Fran Wilson, Katherine Brunt, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Winfield, Sophie Ecclestone, Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Glenn

Pakistan’s poor fielding
Sciver lose her wicket to Aliya Riaz’s wide out ball, when she tried to hit hard by getting out from crease letting keeper to stump her. Fran Wilson gets in crease and pair with England’s skipper and provide the needed partnership. Pakistan players dropped catch for Wilson in Aliya Riaz’s over and for Knight’s in Nida Dar’s over shows their poor fielding.
Knight’s half century
In the last ball of 15th over Knight scored her fifty in Baig’s over while England’s score reached 124. There’s an another drop for Knight’s wicket in Aiman Anwer’s over but in the 5th ball of the same over Aiman uproot Wilson’s wicket when she scored 22 runs from 19 balls. In the 18th over England lose two wickets including England’s skipper. Nida Dar in her last over picked England skipper Knight and puts an end to her impressive strike when she scored 62 runs from 47 balls. England ends up scoring 158 runs for seven wicket lose.

Shrubsole’s revenge
After the victory over West Indies Pakistan get into their second game in the tournament of the T20I World cup. Muneeba Ali and Javeria Khan gets in crease, Muneeba Ali is on strike. Shrubsole opens the attack against Pakistan. Muneeba Ali hit an impressive four in the Shrubsole’s second over but in the very next ball Shrubsole got her revenge by dismissing her. In the Sciver’s over Javeria Khan hit two consecutive boundary and impressed every one where Maroof remained without scoring any after facing five balls. Aliya Riaz paired with Sidra Nawaz paired and expect to drag Pakistan from losing. Aliya Riaz hit an impressive six in Sciver’s over and build belief that she would drag Pakistan towards victory. The 49 run partnership has been broken successfully by Ecclestone’s Stump-to-stump ball at a speed of 82kph.
Shrubsole’s achievement in T20I
In the very next over Shrubsole scatters Pakistan dream towards a descent score by uprooting Aliya Riaz’s wicket when she scored 41 runs from 33 balls. And also bagged her 100th T20I wickets by uprooting Baig’s wicket in bowled and caught style. With couple of balls left in hand England fold up Pakistan for 116 runs and registered their second victory in Women’s T20I World cup tournament.
Player of the match
Heather Knight(England)
Batting : 62 from 47 balls.
Heather Knight : Really pleased with the effort. Thought the bowlers were brilliant. The spinners especially were clinical. Happy to get one more win on the board. I am enjoying batting up the order. I think it was a bit slower tonight. I tried to be there till the end. We knew 150-plus was going to be a good score. We have to prepare well for the next game. It’s about keeping the form going and momentum is a really big thing in T20s.
Captain’s view
Heather Knight: There are areas where we can improve. Nat is in outstanding form. The wicket was on the slower side and we got a score that was more than par. Fielding and bowling performance was pretty good. You are gonna lose wickets in T20 cricket. With the depth in our batting line-up, it’s fine to lose wickets. We wanna be positive, go hard and get those big scores. That’s how we are gonna win. It’s about winning the game at the end of the day. Sometimes, you have to scrape wins, it’s all about winning and qualifying for the semifinal.
Javeria Khan: She (Bismah Maroof) got hit on the thumb and has gone for an X-ray. It was more about fielding (where we lost the game). The fielders will have to step up. That was the real difference (between the two sides). If you give them (England) anything loose, they’ll punish. It all comes down to mental toughness. This is a young bunch, we have to stand up to the occasion. We will make more plans and come back stronger. We weren’t able to execute our shots well under pressure.
