    “No Involvement In Cryptocurrency And Blockchain Branding”, BCCI Warns WPL Teams

    BCCI has informed the 5 WPL teams that it can involve commercial associations with fantasy sports but must avoid involving with cryptocurrencies, betting, gambling, real money and tobacco sectors. The board has warned that any franchise associating itself with barred brands could face stringent actions.

    BCCI has received INR 4669.99 crores in the Women’s Premier League team Auction. As per WPL 2023 schedule, the first match will be played between Team Mumbai and Team Ahmedabad on March 4 with the final match on March 26.

    BCCI Warns WPL Teams

    As expected the entire WPL 2023 will be played at two venues in Mumbai – CCI and DY Patil Stadium. Ahead of the tournament, BCCI organised Auction for WPL where the teams made a bidding war to rope the needed player as per their stats and analysis.

    A total of 1525 players registered for the inaugural Women’s Premier League Player Auction & the final list was pruned to 409 players.

    BCCI Advisory has issued strict guidelines to the WPL teams regarding sponsorship. “No Franchisee shall undertake a partnership or any kind of association with an entity that is in any way connected/related to an entity that is involved/operates, directly or indirectly, in the betting/gambling/real money gaming/tobacco sector. The Franchisees may engage in partnerships with entities in the fantasy sports sector.” said the BCCI advisory.

    “No Franchisee shall undertake a partnership or any kind of association with an entity that is in any way connected/related to an entity that is involved/operates, directly or indirectly, in the cryptocurrency sector.” the statement stated.

    BCCI Advisory issued a warning to WPL Teams. “These guidelines form part of the WPL regulations and any breaches of these guidelines will be dealt with as per the provisions of section 6 of the Operational Rules. Any breaches of the Clothing & Equipment Regulations will be dealt with as per the provisions of the Disciplinary process,” said BCCI.

    “The franchisees should provide full details of the rights and benefits that will be utilized by their sponsors, not less than 10 days before the start of the season, as per the franchise commercial deliverables sheet, which will be shared by the BCCI.” the statement added.

    WPL 2023 Auction Rules

    • Up to 90 players are to be sold during the WPL 2023 Auction day.
    • Each team can buy a minimum of 15 players and a maximum of 18 players.
    • Each team will have a purse value of INR 12 crore(App USD 1.46 million)
    • Teams can buy seven overseas players, including one from an Associate nation.
    • Teams will be able to field up to five overseas players in their playing XI, providing one is from an Associate nation.
