The Hundred Cricket Rules
The Hundred Cricket rules are a bit different from the regular limited-overs cricket rules. England introduced the game with simple rules, but new to the cricket era. Many cricket experts feel that this would bring a storm in the cricket world due to its simplified rules.
The following are the set of rules that have been followed during the recent edition of the Hundred Competition.
- Each innings consists of 100 legal balls. The team scoring the most runs wins the match.
- The fielding side changes ends after every 10 balls. Two five-ball overs are bowled from each end before the teams switch ends.
- Bowlers can deliver either five or 10 consecutive balls. A bowler can continue for another five balls after completing the first five, subject to the bowling restrictions.
- Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 20 balls per innings. This is equivalent to four five-ball overs.
- A Strategic Timeout is available to the fielding side. The captain can request one 90-second timeout when the ball is dead, but it cannot be taken during the first 25 balls of an innings.
- The Strategic Timeout is optional. If it is not taken, the allocated 90 seconds is added to the extra time available for the match.
- Each team has a 25-ball powerplay. During the powerplay, fielding restrictions apply to limit the number of players allowed outside the inner fielding circle.
- During the powerplay, a maximum of two fielders can be outside the fielding circle. The circle has a radius of 30 yards for the men’s competition and 25.15 yards for the women’s competition.
- After the powerplay, fielding restrictions continue to apply. In the men’s competition, no more than five fielders can be outside the fielding circle, while the women’s competition permits a maximum of four.
- The Hundred uses five-ball overs. An innings consists of a maximum of 20 five-ball overs, although it is described as 100 balls rather than 20 conventional overs.
- There is one innings per team. Each side can bat for a maximum of 100 legal balls unless it is bowled out earlier.
- Batters do not change ends between five-ball overs. They remain at their respective ends until the fielding side changes ends after 10 balls.
- A match can be shortened because of rain or other interruptions. In such cases, the number of balls available to each team may be reduced according to the competition’s playing conditions.
- A minimum of five overs is required for a completed match in normal rain-affected group-stage circumstances, unless a result has already been achieved.
- A tied knockout match is decided by a Super Five. Each team faces one five-ball over, with further Super Fives played if necessary.
- The standard cricket dismissal rules continue to apply. Players can be dismissed through methods such as bowled, caught, LBW, run out and stumped, subject to The Hundred’s playing conditions.
- A batter must be ready within the specified time after a wicket. Under the 2026 playing conditions, the incoming batter must be ready within 60 seconds, with further penalties applying for repeated delays.
