South Africa became the second team to qualify for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 semis on Thursday that the match has been CALLED OFF against West Indies.
Rain washed out Thursday’s game against the West Indies in Wellington after the Proteas – put in to bat in a match reduced to just 26 overs – had reached 61 for four off 10.5 overs. Not the end any team would’ve wanted after getting on to the field after a four-hour delay.
Wellington was not a friendly place to play cricket in the morning, with persistent rainfall.
After the announcement that the Match has been CALLED OFF, the both team captain came up for a chat. During the post match presentation, the South African Women’s Team Skipper, Sune Luus shared her excitement and happiness for sealing a spot into the semi’s in ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022.
“Everybody’s extremely excited and happy to be in the semis. With the rain today wasn’t ideal sitting around and waiting. Not the best of starts but we still have to take the positives out of today. The way Mignon batted, she has been shy of runs in the competition and she needed that for her confidence,” said the South African Women’s Team Skipper, Sune Luus.
She also added that “There’s still a lot of batters who would be happy to get runs, Lizelle Lee at the top and our No.3 spot as well. With our bowling to keep hitting our strides and we pride ourselves on our fielding, so we would like to improve on that,”.
Both the teams go home with 1 point in their table. A blessing in disguise perhaps for West Indies as they now end with 7 points and India Women need to win their clash against South Africa Women. If they fail to do so, West Indies Women go through. If India wins then West Indies Women will pray that England lose a game. South Africa won’t be much worried as they have now booked their semi final berth.
