Australian all-rounder Will Sutherland is set to miss the County Championship this year due to a back problem.
Will Sutherland ruled out of County Cricket 2024
Will Sutherland who is set to make his County stint for Somerset has been dealt with a blow before the tournament.
The 24-year-old Sutherland experienced a back injury during the Sheffield Shield games’ final round. He had been due to play the first block of the championship games in April and May.
The Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry spoke about the player. “Everyone involved really feels for Will as he was relishing the challenge of playing for Somerset this summer, and we wish him a swift recovery.”
“Obviously, it’s a blow to lose a quality player this close to the start of the season, and our focus now is to secure a suitable replacement.”
Sutherland who made his ODI debut for Australia last month had signed to play for Essex last summer before being ruled out due to a back stress fracture.
Somerset will have the services of Matt Renshaw for the start of the season. The Australia opener will be available for the first seven games of the championship. Other than him many Australia players are set to join County Cricket 2024.
Recently Will Pucovski’s deal with Leicestershire was cancelled after the player suffered the latest concussion during the Sheffield Shield during the match between Victoria and Tasmania.
Leicestershire had signed Pucovski as a backup for South African all-rounder Wiann Mulder for the first five games of the County Championship.
“It’s a huge shame to lose Will at this stage, but his health must come first,” said Leicestershire’s director of cricket, Claude Henderson.
The County Championship 2024 is set to be played between April 05 and September 29, 2024. Surrey is the champions of the County Championships 2023 Division One after defeating Somerset in the final round of the tournament.
The first match of the 2024 season will be played between Sussex and Northamptonshire at 1st Central County Ground.
