Rohit Sharma will lead the team while Hardik Pandya named as the vice-captain of the team. As per the Asia Cup 2023 schedule, the 7 times Asia Cup trophy winner will play their first game of the tournament against Pakistan on September 2 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy.
While much speculation roamed around the cricket community, BCCI announced the squad with many surprises.
Since the 2019 World Cup failure, Indian cricket has grappled with a significant problem at the number 4 position. Though several batters’ scores run at the no.4 spot, India still remains without a solid option for the spot.
India will try their best in the Asia Cup 2023 to finalise a solid player for the No. 4 spot to avoid errors in the World Cup campaign. Earlier, Ajit Agarkar confirms that Shreyas Iyer is fully fit for the tournament while KL Rahul is carrying a niggle, but is expected to be fully fit by the 2-3rd match of the Asia Cup.
Post the final training camp for the Asia Cup, the Indian head coach gave a final update on Shreyas’ position in the Asia Cup 2023.
Head Coach Rahul Dravid said: “Shreyas Iyer has ticked all the boxes in the practice session. We’ll give him game time in the Asia Cup”
“People talk a lot about experimentation but even before 18-20 months, I could have told who were the candidates for the number 4 & 5 – it was always between KL, Pant and Iyer but unfortunately all got injured together”, he added.

The Asia Cup 2023 will begin on August 30 with the final match scheduled to play on September 17 at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
