Mulder sustained the injury after being hit on the hand by a 140 kmph Lahiru Kumara delivery while batting on Day 02 in the first Test in Durban. Mulder was in considerable pain and took some time before batting again. But he faced just two more deliveries before walking off the field in pain.
In the same session, he came out to bat again when South Africa were nine down for 145. He and Kagiso Rabada added 26 runs for the final wicket where Mulder even hit Dhananjaya de Silva for a six down the ground.
X-rays were taken during the lunch break that followed showed the extent of the injury which will now keep him out of action for the second test.
