Ahead of the IPL 2024, Royal Challengers Bangalore planned to build a backroom with new support staff after deciding to part ways with Director of Cricket Mike Hesson and coach Sanjay Bangar.
Who is the next coach for RCB in IPL 2024
In general, the IPL coaching staff contracts are up for renewal in September, and the RCB indicated that their performance will be closely deliberated before arriving at a decision.
The former Zimbabwe player Andy Flower was named as RCB’s new head coach and will be taking the reins of the team in the next IPL season. Andy Flower takes over from Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, the director of cricket operations of Bangalore and head coach respectively.
Flower’s association with the Lucknow Super Giants concluded earlier this year following the culmination of his two-year contract after IPL 2023. The Sanjiv Goenka-owned team has already enlisted Justin Langer.
“Their contract with RCB is still intact. The team is still under the process of review. We will come back if any announcement on the changes in the team”, RCB said in a statement.
Mike Hesson becomes a member of RCB in August 2019 following a revamp of the coaching staff after their last-placed finish that year. It is worth mentioning that Hesson was one of the top candidates to become India’s head coach in 2019 and finished next to Ravi Shastri who was retained by BCCI.
On the other hand, Bangar who could not retain his job as India’s batting coach during that period took up commentary roles and stayed away from coaching for the next two years.
Sanjay Bangar began his tenure with RCB in the 2022 season. The former Indian all-rounder joined RCB as their new batting coach ahead of the IPL 2021 and was promoted as the head coach of the team after Simon Katich parted ways with the franchise for personal reasons.
RCB who are yet to win their maiden IPL title had a good run during Hesson’s tenure as coach and then as director of cricket operations.
Under Hesson, RCB finished fourth in the league in 2020 and lost the Eliminator to Sunrisers Hyderabad. While RCB ended in third position in 2021 and lost the Eliminator to Kolkata Knight Riders.
In IPL 2022, RCB ended in fourth position before winning the Eliminator and then losing Qualifier 2 to Rajasthan Royals which pushed RCB out of the contest.
In IPL 2023 with victories in 7 matches out of 14, RCB ended up in 6th position and failed to enter the playoffs.
Notably, RCB had a better NRR than fourth-placed Mumbai Indians which means an extra win might placed RCB in the playoff.
