“we’re Longing” Kraigg Brathwaite declares West Indies Craves for more Test Cricket

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite has highlighted the importance of more test teams for his side as the team is preparing for the second test against Three Lions. His statement comes after the heavy defeat in the first test at Lord’s where the West Indies suffered a defeat by an innings and 114 runs difference to the hosts.

England, alongside India and Australia is part of international cricket’s financially independent nations as they can arrange more test schedules, unlike West Indies. While the tests are mandatory in bilateral series, the ICC’s policies provide a minimum of two test matches per series.

England has 17 test matches scheduled for this year while West Indies has only nine matches in 2024. “It’s a challenge. I mean, we’re longing for more Test cricket,” said Braithwaite.

“The more you play, the faster you learn. If it’s spread over a long period, with just two Tests here and two Tests there, it takes longer to learn. We need more Tests,” he added.

“All I can do is keep advocating for it. I don’t know how hard it is to organize a Test series for the West Indies, but I will keep asking. I hope those in charge of scheduling, amidst all the white ball and T20 tournaments, can fit in five or six more Test matches for us each year.”

West Indies have to focus on batting in the second test after being bowled out for 121 and 136 at Lord’s. “It’s pretty simple what we’ve got to do — we’ve got to bat a lot better.

“We’ve got to find a way to put runs on the board. I know what I have to do, and it’s important to lead this team and the batting. We just have to keep learning.” concluded Kraigg Brathwaite.

After James Anderson’s retirement, they brought in Mark Wood as a replacement. The second test match will kick-start at 03:30 PM IST on July 18 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
