Sri Lankan wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series vs India due to an injury to his left hamstring. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) named 34-year-old legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay as Hasaranga’s replacement for the last two ODIs.
During the India tour of Sri Lanka 2024, a total of three T20Is and three ODIs have been scheduled to be played between 27 July and 7 August. After losing the T20I series by 0-3, Sri Lanka was expected to make a bounce back in the ODI series.
Though Sri Lanka failed to win the game, they managed to pull a thrilling tie in the first ODI of the series played in Colombo.
Dunith Wellalage won the Player of the Match award, but Wanindu Hasaranga also played a key role in the Lankan’s draw game. In the first inning with the bat, W Hasaranga scored 24 runs off 35 balls assisting Dunith Wellalage in Sri Lanka’s fightback with the bat.
In the second innings, Hasaranga bagged three wickets for 58 runs in his allotted 10 overs. His three wickets include the dismissal of Virat Kohli(24) and KL Rahul(31).
“He experienced pain in his left hamstring while delivering the last ball of his 10th over during the first ODI. An MRI performed on the player, following this, confirmed the injury,” the SLC stated in a media release on Saturday (August 3).
Prior to Wanindu Hasaranga, Sri Lanka already lost multiple players to injury. Dilshan Madushanka (hamstring) and Matheesha Pathirana (shoulder) were ruled out of the ODIs before the series got underway.
While Dushmantha Chameera (bronchitis and respiratory infection) and Nuwan Thushara (thumb) were ruled out before the T20I matches that preceded the ODIs. The second ODI match of the India tour of Sri Lanka 2024 will be played on August 4 in R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
