Virat Kohli survives a close call; avoids golden duck at Sydney

Indian star batter Virat Kohli who hasn’t scored up to his mark in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series, narrowly avoids being dismissed off the first ball in the fifth test at Sydney after the third umpire went in Kohli’s favour.

The incident took place in the fifth ball of the eighth over which also turned out to be Virat Kohli’s first ball in the first inning of the Sydney test. Right after Boland dismissed Jaiswal for 10, Virat made his way onto the pitch while receiving a mixed welcome from the fans at the stadium.

Virat Kohli made a loose push outside off while Steve Smith who has been stationed at the second slip threw his hand and made a catch in close contact with the ground. While reviewing, the third umpire claims it might be rolling on the ground before being scooped up.

The decision showed a sign of relief for Virat Kohli and the Indian fans. While Smith stands unhappy with the decision and shakes his head in displeasure.

In the crucial test at Sydney, India opted to bat first after winning the toss. But India’s opening duo failed to lay a strong foundation as Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul were dismissed for 10 and 4 respectively.

With a couple of early wickets, Team India needs to build a partnership which could move them to a better position in the do-or-die game at Sydney.
