A recent development at the Bengaluru-based franchise will be huge among the cricket fans as RCB is set to re-appoint Virat Kohli as captain.
Kohli who captained the team between 2013 and 2021, decided to give up the responsibility after the 14th season of the T20 league. Meanwhile, the former South Africa cricketer Faf du Plessis has led the side in the last three seasons.
But with a mega auction is set to happen ahead of IPL 2025, a big change is set to bring inside the RCB where Kohli might take over the captaincy.
Virat Kohli has stepped down from captaincy across all three formats and also has announced his retirement from T20I after India’s triumph in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. According to reports, Kohli is set to lead his IPL side again.
Kohli revealed his decision to quit RCB leadership before the conclusion of the 2021 season. With many believing that the decision came as a result of the franchise’s inability to win a trophy under his leadership, the franchise challenges remain the same.
“I will continue to be an RCB player till I play my last game in the IPL. But it’s been a great journey of nine years of joy, frustration, moments of happiness and sadness, and I just want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me and believing in me relentlessly and unconditionally,” said Kohli.
“And I will continue to be committed to play for this franchise as I said till the last day of me playing IPL… for you guys, for the fans, because of what you’ve done for me and how you’ve made me feel over the last so many years that is going to stay with me for the rest of my life,” Kohli had said three years ago.
Kohli’s return as captain indicates that du Plessis would not be retained by the franchise. It has also been reported that RCB went after Shubman Gill for the role but the talks did not go as per plan as the veteran batter decided to remain with Gujarat Titans.
Apart from Kohli, several players like Mohammed Siraj, Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar are in RCB’s Probable Retained players list for IPL 2025.
Though this year’s auction was planned to be hosted outside India, fans can still enjoy the IPL 2025 auction live streaming from their home.
With BCCI announcing October 31 as the deadline for franchises to announce their retained players list, it will be interesting which players will be coming into the auction pool.
