The Australian opener Usman Khawaja has edged out his teammate Travis Head, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, and England’s Joe Root for the ICC Awards 2023 in the Test Category after following a successful year where Australia claimed their first ICC World Test Championship title.
Usman Khawaja had amassed 1210 runs in 13 matches during the year 2023. He also scored a career-best 195* against South Africa.
He shined during his Test Career notably during the series against India on home away tour where he completed the series as the top scorer with 333 runs in four matches which included a century and two fifties.
Despite his weak performances during the World Test Championship Final, Khawaja rebounded against England in the Ashes where he emerged as the highest run-getter in the series with 496 runs.
Khawaja stands top and breached the four-figure mark for Test runs during the year 2023.
Khawaja had two centuries against South Africa 195* and 180. During the first innings of the opening Test, after scoring 393 runs England put pressure on Australia with early wickets.
Khawaja made crucial partnerships with Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Alex Carey to score his century that helped Australia get close to England’s total.
Khawaja proved to be an obstacle in England’s path after they set a target of 281 runs to win. He scored 65 runs off 197 deliveries. Finally, Australia won the Ashes 2023 with 3-2.
