Tim Southee Equals Chris Gayle’s 98 Sixes Tally during his Farwell Test

Fast bowler Tim Southee got level with Chris Gayle in the list of most sixes in Test Cricket during the third match of the England tour of New Zealand 2024.

He smashed his 98th six and equalled legendary West Indies batter Chris Gayle in the list of most sixes in Test cricket during day 01 of the England tests.

Tim Southee has announced his test retirement and England tests will be his last. Playing his farewell test, Tim Southee was given a guard of honour as he walked out to bat late on the opening day.

The seamer wasted no time in settling down and whacked Ben Stokes for a six on just the third ball of the innings.

Two balls later, he registered another six agianst England skipper, clobbering him over deep backward square leg. In the next over, he clubbed Gus Atkinson over deep mid-wicket to register his third six of the six innings, which took his career tally of 98 maximums.

As a result, he got levelled edge against Gus Atkinson and was caught by Brydon Carse at mid-off. He was dismissed for a quick fire 23 (10) with the help of one four and three sixes. He now becomes the fourth player in the history of the format to hit over 100 sixes.

Meanwhile, New Zealand finished day 01 on 315/9 in 82 overs with Mitchell Santner (50*) and William O’Rourke (0*) at the crease.

New Zealand got off to a good start after being put into bat first with Tom Latham and Will Young scoring 63 and 42 respectively adding 105 runs for the first wicket.

The partnership was brought to an end as Gus Atkinson dismissed Young while Latham fell prey to Matthew Potts.

Kane Williamson was bowled out for 44 which left New Zealand on 172/3. However, the hosts suffered a collapse with Rachin Ravindra (18), Daryl Mitchell (14), Tom Blundell (21) and Matt Henry (8) falling cheaply for 231/7.

However, lower order contributions from Southee and Santner (50*) helped them to cross 300 run mark at Seddon Park.
