South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the first test against Bangladesh which is scheduled to start on October 21 at Dhaka.
Bavuma who had scans for a discomfort in the left arm, will be rested after the scans revealed a muscle strain in his left triceps.
However, Bavuma will travel with the squad to Dhaka on Tuesday and continue his recovery under the supervision of the medical team.
The 34-year-old missed the third ODI against Ireland in UAE earlier this week. Rassie van der Dussen stepped in as captain for the final match of the tour. Bavuma sustained the injury during the second ODI after landing on his elbow at the non-striker’s end.
Aiden Markram missed the Ireland series and will be leading the side in Bavuma’s absence. Meanwhile, youngster Dewald Brevis has been handed his maiden call-up to the Test side to cover for the injured skipper.
Brevis who featured in T20Is is set to make his debut in his red-ball cricket, after an impressive performance against the Sri Lanka A team last month.
South Africa has also added Lungi Ngidi as South Africa squad as a replacement for pacer Nandre Burger who was ruled out of the test series in Bangladesh due to a lumbar stress fracture.
The first match of the Bangladesh South Africa tests series begins on October 21 at Sher-e-Bangla.
