Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav who underwent surgery earlier this year remains doubtful for the first two games of the Mumbai Indians in the upcoming IPL 2024.
Suryakumar Yadav Set to Miss First Two Games of IPL 2024
Suryakumar Yadav who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy is still not clear regarding his participation in the IPL games.
Suryakumar Yadav has been sidelined from action since the T20I series on India’s tour of South Africa 2024. He suffered an ankle injury while fielding in Johannesburg on December 14. This led to the discovery of a sports hernia which complicated his fitness concerns.
Suryakumar Yadav underwent surgery after the ankle injury and since then many have assumed that he had an operation on the ankle. But the batter confirmed that he underwent surgery for a sports hernia and not the ankle as there has been a lot of confusion.
Due to the injury, he missed the T20I series on Afghanistan’s tour of India 2024 which was the last T20I schedule for India before the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
As per IPL 2024 Schedule, Mumbai Indians will play their first match of the season against Gujarat Titans on March 24 in Ahmedabad.
“Surya’s rehabilitation is on track and he will certainly ‘Return to Play’ in the IPL itself. However it is still not clear whether the NCA’s Sports Science and Medical Team will give clearance to play in the first two away games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad (March 27),” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Recovering Suryakumar Yadav was recently seen batting in the nets. He posted a story on his Instagram handle where he was seen batting in nets preparing for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
“There are still 12 days to go before MI play their first game but it could be a race against time to get fit by the first match itself,” the source added.
Surya last played in South Africa, where he led the national team in the T20 format. Suryakumar Yadav has so far played 139 IPL matches and scored 3249 runs at a strike rate of 143.32 which includes 21 half-centuries and a century.
