The former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has criticised Virat Kohli for his dismissal in the first innings of the Brisbane test on the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
India lost early wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. It was expected Kohli to step in and get the side back on track. But that did not happen, as Kohli perished for 3 runs.
Josh Hazlewood picked the wicket as the Indian batter looked to play in cover as his natural instincts as he looked to play cover drive only to find the edge and get caught.
While speaking on the media, Gavaskar said, “If it was on the fourth stump I could understand. This was wide, on the 7th & 8th stump ball, you could say. There’s no need to play that.
Sunil Gavaskar stated that Kohli needed to show patience as India already lost two wicket due to poor shots.
“He’d be very, very disappointed, he’d be very upset with that. Even before Rishabh Pant faced a ball, the rain started to come down and the covers have come on. If Kohli had shown a bit of patience he could be not out with KL Rahul,” said Gavaskar.
The star batter also lost his wicket in the second test similarly as he chased wide deliveries bowled outside his off stump. The problem has been going on with Virat Kohli since the start of his career and it has troubled him time and time again.
Several cricket pundits and fans have asked Kohli to take inspiration from how Sachin Tendulkar refrained from a playing cover drive during the Sydney Test against Australia in 2004 to score a double century.
Virat Kohli had a century in the second innings of the Perth test and this lead to fans believing that the 36-year old is back in form. But his performances in Adelaide and first innings of the Brisbane Test have a lot to be desired.
Before the start of 2021, Kohli, had the most centuries when it come to fab four (Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root).
Joe Root has 36 test tons, Williamson has 33 and Smith 33 while the Indian has 30 centuries to his home.
