With the beginning of the New Year 2024, Sunil Gavaskar has picked Jasprit Bumrah as one of the impressive contenders for India’s best performers of 2023.

Bumrah has bagged 28 wickets with an economy of 4.40 in 16 ODI innings last year. He bagged four wickets in a single test and dismissed four wickets in two T20Is he played.

When asked to pick India’s performer of 2023 in a talk show, Sunil Gavaskar said, “That’s a tough one because I think there are plenty of contenders. Shubman Gill himself, Mohammed Shami with the way he bowled, Mohammed Siraj with the way he bowled in the finals of the Asia Cup.”

“The comeback of Jasprit Bumrah and, of course, the absolutely incredible batting of Virat Kohli in the World Cup where he got three hundreds and about five fifties in nine or 10 innings,” he added.

He also mentioned the Indian star Virat Kohli who was the most run scorer in the World Cup 2023 amassing 765 runs, including three hundreds and six half-centuries in 11 matches with an impressive outstanding average of 95.62.

On the bowling unit, Mohammad Shami was the highest wicket taker bagging 24 wickets in seven matches of the World Cup campaign, and maintained an average of 10.70.

However, Irfan Pathan had other players in mind for India’s performers of 2023. He picked Shubman Gill and KL Rahul as the performers.

He said, “If we see the performer of the year, Shubman Gill’s name will definitely be there but there are two or three other contenders, who were fantastic.”

“KL Rahul – he had an average of 70 in ODI cricket, especially when he came back from injury. Plus he also took the responsibility of wicketkeeping in Test cricket.”

He chose Mohammed Shami as another candidate. He said, “The century in Centurion will be considered special for years to come. I feel the third player is Mohammed Shami because he wasn’t bowling at his normal position (with the new ball) in the World Cup.”

Irfan Pathan pointed out that Shami became important in India’s bowling attack in the World Cup once he was included in the Playing 11. He concluded by stating there are multiple players for the best performers and it would be difficult to take one name.
