Sri Lanka Players Rise in ICC Test Rankings After England Win

Six Sri Lanka players have obtained new career-high ratings on the latest ICC Men’s Test Rankings following their victory in the third test match against England at The Oval.

Sri Lanka secured their first test victory in England in the recently concluded series, with Skipper Dhanajaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, and Pathum Nissanka.

The top-order batter helped the side with a stunning century to secure their first win in 10 years. De Silva is the top scorer for Sri Lanka in the first innings of the test with 69 runs and that helped the right-hander obtain a new career-best rating and gain three places to move to 13th overall on the test rankings for batters to now be the leading player on the list from his team.

Kamindu Mendis and Nissanka also found their career-best ratings in the Test batters rankings with the former gaining six places to advance to 19th rank, after his half-century of his own against England and the latter jumping 42 spots to 39th position after smashing 64 and 127*.

England’s Joe Root retained his no. 1 spot despite his scores of 13 and 12 at The Oval. He dropped 25 points from 922 to 899. Following him, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell hold second and third rankings with 859 and 768 points respectively. Australia’s Steven Smith is in fourth place with 757 points.

Rohit Sharma is the highest-ranked batter for India with 751 points and secured fifth position in the rankings. Meanwhile, Jaiswal and Kohli secured the positions of 6 and 7 respectively with 740 and 737 points.

Indian players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been ranked in the top 10 positions despite India haven’t played any tests since March 2024.

The trio has been given advantage with Harry Brook’s failure twice in the third and final test against Sri Lanka.

Harry Brook has dropped to 12th position with 709 rating points even as Babar Azam is close to entering the top 10.

England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope has gained seven places and has improved to 27th spot after his century in the first innings against Sri Lanka and Jamie Smith secured 30th position jumping six spots after a half-century in the second innings.

Sri Lanka bowlers have also secured their career-best ratings in test bowler rankings, with Vishwa Fernando leading the way by gaining 13 spots to move to equal 31st following five wickets during England tests.

Teammates Lahiru Kumara and Milan Rathnayake secured 32nd and 84th spots in the rankings, while England’s Olly Stone moved 13 places to secure 74th ranking after scalping three wickets in the first innings of the Test.
