Smriti Mandhana Bowls for First Time in Internationals; Picks Sune Luss Wicket

Smriti Mandhana bowls for the first time and dismisses Sune Luus in the second ball of the over during the second ODI match of the South Africa Women’s tour of India 2024.

Smriti Mandhana Bowls for First Time against South Africa

The batting left-hander bowled right-arm medium pace and caught Sune Luus off guard in the 15th over of South Africa’s innings. The Proteas men lost three wickets early in the pursuit of chasing a mammoth total of 325 against India on June 19 at Bengaluru.

With Arundhati Reddy and Deepti Sharma picking the wickets of Tazmin Brits and Anneke Bosch in the 4th and 12th overs respectively, Smriti Mandhana picked the wicket of Sune Luus for 12 runs picking her maiden ODI wicket. She bowled at a speed of 110.9 kmph.

This is not the first time Smriti bowled in professional cricket as she has bowled for RCB in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League. She bowled three deliveries against Mumbai Indians and conceded 9 runs. She also bowled in the Senior Women’s Muli-Day Interzonal tournament which was played in Pune in April.

She has also bowling in the Women’s Big Bash League. She has three wickets to her name with a best bowling of 2/6. Coming to the match, Smriti Mandhana scored 136 runs on 120 deliveries scored her 7th ODI century, and tallied Mitali Raj’s ODI hundreds.

She became the first Indian woman to score consecutive centuries after smashing an impressive hundred in the first ODI match where Indian women won the match by 143 runs.

After the dismissal of Sune Luus, South Africa did not lose any wickets and scored 219 by the end of the 39th over. Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp smashed half-centuries and are in the pursuit of smashing hundreds each. They made an impressive stand of unbeaten 150 partnership in the over.  By the end of the 40th over, South Africa scored 223 runs for 3 wickets.
