Zimbabwe has named Sikandar Raza as the captain of the 17-member squad for the T20I series against India set to play between July 6 and 14. After the successful T20I World Cup 2024 campaign, a new, fresh, young India under Shubman Gill was scheduled to face Zimbabwe to play five T20I matches in July.
To clash with the young generation players, Zimbabwe picked their T20I squad conscientiously. Ryan Burl, Joylord Gumbie and Ainsley Ndlovu were sidelined from the T20I squad while Craig Ervine and Sean Williams were not considered for selection.
Tendai Chatara, Brandon Mavuta and Wessly Madhevere made their return for the Zimbabwe squad for India T20Is set to be led by Sikandar Raza.
Uncapped Antum Naqvi was a notable inclusion in the squad. Naqvi who applied for naturalisation in Zimbabwe, was born to Pakistani parents in Belgium and plays for the Rhinos in Zimbabwe’s domestic circuit. He averages 73.42 in List A cricket.
Naqvi achieved a rare record in January this year by scoring 300* in first-class cricket, becoming the first batter ever to record a triple-century for any Zimbabwean team.
Notably, this will be the first assignment for Justin Sammons who was recently named as the head coach of the Zimbabwe cricket team.
The first match of the India tour of Zimbabwe 2024 will be played on July 6 in Harare Sports Club, Harare. All five matches of the tournament will be played at Harare Sports Club, Harare.
