Shreyas Iyer Set to Play for Mumbai at Buchi Babu Tournament

The Mumbai Cricket Association has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer is set to play in the Buchi Babu Tournament on August 13. The right-hander will play for Mumbai in the match against Jammu & Kashmir on August 27 in Coimbatore.

“Shreyas Iyer will play for the Mumbai team at the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association. He will be playing the Mumbai v Jammu & Kashmir match to be played from 27th August 2024 at Coimbatore,” said MCA in a press release.

Shreyas Iyer played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024 after being excluded from the last three tests in England’s tour of India. Iyer will be looking for a brilliant display ahead of India’s squad announcement for the Bangladesh tests.

India has a tight-packed test schedule in-home season 2024-25 with 10 tests to be played over the next five months. As per the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament 2024 Schedule, the first match will be played between Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand in Tirunelveli.

Earlier, Shreyas Iyer was excluded from BCCI’s central contract and has been offered a similar path to return for international action. Shreyas Iyer has scored 811 runs in 14 tests with an average of 38.86 including a century and five fifties.

While speaking in an interview in May, Shreyas Iyer revealed that he has missed a lot of domestic games because of back issues. The right-handed batter has added that the management did not agree with his concern which led to his Central contract snub.

“I was definitely struggling after the World Cup in the longer format. When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it.”

“But at the same time, the competition is with me. When the IPL was approaching all I wanted to see was that I’ve put my best foot forward and whatever planning and strategizing we [KKR] did before it, basically if we could execute it to the best of our abilities,” he added.

Shreyas Iyer has been hanging in the edge in and out of India’s test squad since 2023 BGT due to a back injury. With Gautam Gambhir appointed as India’s head coach, there is a good chance for the player to prove himself in the longer format.
