Shoaib Bashir’s fifer sealed series victory for England against West Indies

Shoaib Bashir who featured in four tests turned out to be a match-winner for Ben Stokes and Co. as they achieved another series victory at home. In the three-match Test series against West Indies, England won the first two games and sealed the series victory with a game to be played at Birmingham.

Ollie Pope turned out to be the run machine for England’s side in their 241-run victory. For his century and a half-century in the first and second innings, Pope was handed the Player of the Match award.

He scored 121 runs in the first inning and scored 51 in the second helping England to post a formidable score.

Speaking of the game, West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first where Zak Crawley and Duckett opened the inning for England.

Though Zak Crawley returned cheaply, Ollie Pope and Duckett made a 105-run stand for the second wicket. With Stokes’ 69 along with decent contributions from the remaining players, England scored 416 runs after losing all their ten wickets in the first inning.

West Indies on the other hand, made a decent start and scored 84 runs for three wickets loss. Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge made a 175-run stand for the next wicket and dragged the Windies back into the game.

Following the duo’s dismissal, West Indies batters struggled to withstand the England bowling attack and lost their momentum.

With Joshua Da Silva’s unbeaten 82, West Indies took a lead of just 41. England on the other hand, with centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook scored 425 runs in their second inning and gave a target of nearly 450 for the Windies to chase down.

Unlike their first inning, West Indies batters found it difficult to face England’s bowling attack. Especially, Shoaib Bashir’s five-wickets haul played a key role in folding West Indies for 143 runs.

England sealed the series victory by winning the second test by 241 runs. The third and final test of the West Indies tour of England 2024 will be played between July 26 and 30 in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
