The Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson takes over Quetta Gladiators after Moin Khan takes over the franchise as a team director.
Watson appointed as Quetta Gladiators head coach for PSL 2024
Quetta Gladiators completed their PSL 2023 campaign in sixth place. The side hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2019.
Quetta Gladiators have signed a deal with former Australian allrounder Shane Watson as head coach of the franchise ahead of the PSL 2024 edition. The announcement will feature the change of coach Moin Khan who was the head coach of the franchise for almost eight years.
It is not clear if Watson’s appointment means the Gladiators are looking for a coaching staff that has seen them miss the playoffs for four successive seasons. The former Australia all-rounder will be back to familiar surroundings, having played for Quetta Gladiators between 2018-2020.
Shane Watson began his PSL career with Islamabad United and joined Quetta Gladiators later. He was the crucial player for the franchise in winning their first title. He was named as the Player of the Tournament for his 430 runs at a striker rate of 143.81.
According to the sources, the franchise and Watson have signed an agreement, and an official announcement is expected to be revealed on Wednesday. Watson retired from all forms of cricket in 2020 and joined the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach in 2022. He was then appointed as the San Fransisco Unicorns franchise in the MLC league this year.
The Quetta Gladiators team owner Nadeem Omar was delighted to sign the deal with the former franchise player Shane Watson.
Shane has been an integral part of the Quetta Gladiators’ success in the initial seasons of the country’s premier league before he took retirement and there has been no better choice than him to coach the side and bring back the glory days which we have been renowned for. I wish him all the best for his new role and believe in his capabilities to take Quetta Gladiators to new heights,” said Nadeem Omar.
