Ranji Trophy 2023-24 Tamil Nadu Squad
The state senior selection committee picked a 15-member squad for the first class competition set to begin on January 5. The Left-arm spinner Sai Kishore is named the captain while Pradosh Ranjan Paul will serve as his deputy during the tournament.
With the previous committee member marking him as the future skipper, he was set to lead the last two matches in the Ranji Trophy 2023. However, due to his illness during the finals, he missed the encounter and led only one game.
Tamil Nadu has not qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament since the 2016-17 season. They won no trophy since the 1987-88 season.
The comeback of left-arm bowler T. Natrajan after three years has boosted the pace attack. He made his last appearance in 2020 against Railways in Chennai. His first-class debut was his Test debut against Australia in Brisbane in 2021.
On the other hand, the all-rounder M. Mohammed returns after being dropped in the previous season. Madhya Pradesh Pacer Kuldeep Sen who joined the Tamil Nadu team earlier this year will be unavailable for the first few games due to personal reasons.
The selectors have omitted B. Aparajith and gone for picking young batters B. Sachin, and R. Vimal Khumar who have been performing well in the recently concluded first-division league and age-group tournaments recently.
“We are looking to build a team for the future and have got a mix of youth and experience. There are some good players coming through the under-19 and under-23 levels as well, and we want to start the transition process slowly,” said U.R. Radhakrishnan, chairman of the selection committee.
