Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Advances in ICC Rankings With No Test Appearance

The International Cricket Council has updated the latest ICC test rankings where Indian players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been ranked in the top 10 positions despite India haven’t played any tests since March 2024.

Their last test scheduled comes from England’s tour of India 2024 where the hosts won the series 4-1. They are scheduled to play 10 matches in the BCCI 2024-25 home season starting with a match test series against Bangladesh on September 19.

Even then Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have jumped one place in the ICC rankings.

Skipper Rohit Sharma is the highest-ranked batter for India with 751 points and secured fifth position in the rankings. Meanwhile, Jaiswal and Kohli secured the positions of 6 and 7 respectively with 740 and 737 points. The trio has been given advantage with Harry Brook’s failure twice in the third and final test against Sri Lanka.

He scored only 19 and 3 runs in the final test played at The Oval earlier this week. Harry Brook has dropped to 12th position with 709 rating points even as Babar Azam is close to entering the top 10.

He secured 11th position with 712 points to his name just behind his teammate Mohammad Rizwan and Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne.

Coming back to the Indian trio, they have a chance of climbing even further as there isn’t much difference from 3rd to 7th players.

India will be facing New Zealand after the end of the Bangladesh series and the ranking will be taken into account depending on the performances in these matches.

Meanwhile, Joe Root is very close to reaching his all-time best after the last update. His 25 runs in two innings against Sri Lanka at The Oval have caused him to lose 23 rating points.

He holds the number one spot with 899 points in the ICC rankings for Test batters. Following him, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell hold second and third rankings with 859 and 768 points respectively. Australia’s Steven Smith is in fourth place with 757 points.
