Rohit Sharma reveals reason behind skipping Sydney Test, says “Not a decision of retirement”

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma finally opened up on the reason behind his absence in the fifth test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

In the ongoing BGT 2024-25, Rohit only scored 31 runs at an average of just 6.20 in the three innings. Ahead of the 5th test, many reports circulated regarding Rohit Sharma’s unavailability for the Sydney test.

While the report received mixed reactions from everyone, fans and cricket experts were left in awe right after Jasprit Bumrah walked down to the toss at Sydney. Even stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah praises Rohit Sharma’s leadership for opting out in the Sydney game.

Rohit’s decision to opt out of the Sydney test sparked the rumours of his test retirement. Following the widespread of his retirement rumour, Rohit Sharma came forward and cleared the air by revealing the reason behind his decision to skip the Sydney Test.

“I had a chat with the coach and the selector was very simple. I am not making runs at the moment. I am not in form and it’s an important game. We need an in-form player. Our batting order isn’t in form at the moment.

So out-of-form players can’t carry the team at the moment. This was the simple thing in my mind. It was my understanding that I should tell the coach and the selector and they backed my call,” Rohit said on Star Sports coverage of the fifth Test.

The 37-year-old has played 67 Tests for India and led the team since 2022. Rohit clearly indicated that he will continue to play the longest format of the game.

“This is not a decision of retirement. I am not moving away from this game. But I took a decision to step away from this game because I was not able to score runs with the bat. There is no guarantee that I will score runs two or five months from now.

I have seen a lot of cricket, every minute, every second and every day life changes. I believe that things will change but at the same time, I have to be realistic as well. People sitting in the commentary box, or writing with a laptop in their hands, will not decide how my life goes,” Rohit Sharma added.

Speaking of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Australia have an upper hand with a couple of victories while the visitors are under pressure to win the test to carry the trophy home.

When we look back at the India National Cricket Team vs Australia Cricket Team Timeline, Australia hasn’t won the BGT title since the 2014/15 season.

The Indian cricket team is scheduled to tour Australia to play five tests between 22 November 2024 and 7 January 2025. Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 will be the first Test series between India and Australia comprising five matches since 1992.
