After a woeful run in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to retire by the end of the SCG test. The Indian captain has made just 31 runs in five matches and has not won any of his six games while captaining the side.
After he failed in the Melbourne test where India suffered an 184-run defeat, the call for Rohit to bid aideu to the longest format of the game after a horror run of form with the bat and poor results of the team on the captaincy front.
India has been running a winless campaign in the last six tests Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy following a whitewash against New Zealand at home.
India secured a 295-run victory in the Perth test and the game at Gabba resulted in a draw. After the win in Adelaide and Melbourne, Australia secured a 2-1 lead in the series. The visitor’s victory in the Perth Test came under Jasprit Bumrah‘s captaincy when Rohit Sharma was absent due to personal reasons.
Rohit Sharma has only 31 runs in five innings with an average of 6.2. Since the start of the Bangladesh series in September, the 37-year-old has made just 164 runs in 15 innings at an average of just 10.93.
As Rohit’s batting form continues to show no sign of improvement, there was speculation that the MCG test could be Rohit’s final outing in red-ball format for India. India’s captain has made up his mind to quit test cricket after the Sydney Test.
But if India managed to make the World Test Championship final, Rohit could convince the selectors to play the summit clash.
The Men in Blues are currently in third position of the WTC points table and the chances of qualifying for the WTC 2025 finals are hanging by a thread and not in their hands anymore. India needs to win the Sydney Test and hope for a favour from Sri Lanka to qualify.
The final test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy will begin on January 03 at Sydney Cricket Ground.
