The Indian wk-batter Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the LSG captain by franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka on January 20.
Pant joined the Lucknow franchise for a record-breaking price of INR 27 crore in the IPL 2025 auction.
He has been released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the auction. He has been part of the Delhi franchise since 2016 and has been the captain of the Delhi Capitals in the past for over three seasons.
The 27-year-old will be the fourth player to captain LSG in the IPL. Before him, KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran had captained the side before in the cricket league.
“The amount of strategising that was done revolved around Rishabh, it was done keeping him in mind,” LSG’s principal owner Sanjiv Goenka mentioned while confirming Pant as the captain. “I think, time will prove that he is not only the most expensive player of IPL but also the best player of IPL,” said Goenka.
“Amazing, overwhelmed by all the things sir said about me,” said Pant after being named the new skipper.
Pant mentioned that the number of talks and conversations he has had with Goenka since being picked by LSG.
The wk-batter has been the captain in IPL for 43 games all for Delhi franchise, with the side winning 24 out of them. Pant had an impressive outing during the 2024 season after making his sensational return following his full recovery from the brutal car accident in December 2022.
Though he might be not an active part of the Indian T20 setup, Pant scored 446 runs in the 2024 season at an average of 40.55 and a strike rate of 155.40 would keep him in to run ahead of the upcoming IPL season.
Rishabh Pant has amassed a total of 3284 runs in 111 matches in the Indian Premier League.
