Rahul Dravid set to join Rajasthan Royals as Kumar Sangakkara likely to leave

Former Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid is set to become the head coach of Rajasthan Royals for the IPL 2025 season. Right after Dravid stepped down as India’s head coach after winning the T20 World Cup 2024, he was rumoured to replace Kumar Sangakkara in the Rajasthan Royals setup.

The 2008 IPL title winners Rajasthan Royals do not have a head coach. Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara serves as the Director of Cricket since 2021 while Shane Bond and Trevor Penny are the assistant coaches.

Rahul Dravid’s availability is an added benefit for the Rajasthan Royals who were in search of a head coach. As Sangakkara was rumoured to become the head coach of the England white-ball team, the possibility of Rahul Dravid joining RR for IPL 2025 remains high.

According to the report, Sangakkara could likely hand over the reins to the most obvious successor, Dravid, for the head coach role. The former India batter previously served as a mentor for the Royals towards the end of his career in 2014 and later as their coach before joining the BCCI setup.

However, Sangakkara had seemingly dismissed the idea of becoming England’s white-ball coach in an interaction with the media a few days earlier, stating that he was happy with his responsibilities at Rajasthan Royals.

English media quoted Sangakkara as saying, “Well, I know my name has been mentioned for some reason, but there has not been any approach as such. I think the England white-ball job is an exciting prospect for anyone, but there are so many good candidates out there. I am very happy at the moment. The Rajasthan Royals experience has been very fulfilling and it has been a job I have really enjoyed over the last four years,”

Dravid played for the Rajasthan Royals and led them to the finals of the Champions League T20 in 2013, and the play-offs of the Indian Premier League in 2013.
