The Punjab Kings have parted ways with their head coach Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar ahead of the IPL 2025.
The development comes after the appointment of Ricky Ponting as PBKS head coach. While Bayliss took over PBKS after IPL 2022, Bangar joined the franchise in December 2023.
After finishing in the eighth position in the 2023 season and ninth in the last season. Sanjay Bangar had his first stint with the franchise in 2014 as their head coach until 2016.
Later that, Bangar was appointed India’s assistant coach. In 2021, he joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru as their batting consultant before being promoted to the head coach role.
Bayliss replaced former India captain Anil Kumble who was the franchise’s head coach from 2020 to 2022. Kumble was the fifth coach Kings had appointed in five seasons after Sanjay Bangar, Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge and Mike Hesson.
Recently the franchise has signed former Australia captain Ponting on a four-year contract.
“The biggest thing that I want to do at Punjab Kings is make everyone aware that it’s going to be a different place. We are not going to sit back and just accept mediocrity and finish down the bottom and have other people sit back and talk about the way the franchise is going.”
“It is going to be more dynamic. And people are going to be talking about this team and this franchise in a different way than ever before,” said Ricky Ponting in an interview.
Meanwhile, the franchise will be gearing up to find a potential candidate to replace Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan who announced his international retirement.
BCCI has said that no Right to Match option shall be available. With the IPL 2025 mega auction date and Venue yet to be announced, the event is set to be hosted in London or UAE and is likely to be a day process, unlike previous IPL auctions.
