With the Asia Cup 2023 set to start on August 30, all teams except the co-hosts Sri Lanka have announced their squad for the tournament.
Probable Sri Lanka squad for Asia Cup 2023
The 16th edition of the Asia Cup is set to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The event will feature 13 matches out of which 4 matches will be played in Pakistan while the remaining nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka.
The Inaugural match of the event will be played between Pakistan and Nepal at Multan Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka is set to play their first match against Bangladesh on August 31 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
Players like Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, and Lahiru Kumara were sidelined from the tournament due to injury. Dushmantha Chameera is sidelined from a shoulder injury he sustained during the Lanka Premier League.
The absence of Kumara, Chameera, and Madushanka will be problematic in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. Wanindu Hasaranga could be replaced by left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage while Dushan Hemantha may also get a place in the squad.
India is most successful with seven trophies in the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka stands second with six titles and Pakistan won two titles in the continental event. Sri Lanka is the reigning champions defeating Pakistan in the 2022 finals.
The tournament will be played between the five full members of the Asian Cricket Council. The 2023 ACC Men’s Premier Cup winner Nepal will join India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
The participating 6 teams will be categorized into 2 groups of three teams where the top 2 teams of the Asia Cup 2023 points table will advance to the Super Four round(of each group). The final of the tournament will be played between the top two teams of the Super 4 round.
India, Pakistan, and Nepal were grouped in A while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan will be in Group B.
India will be playing their first match against arch-rivals against Pakistan on September 2 at Pallekele International Stadium. With the Indian team currently in its final phase of preparation for the event, the Rohit Sharma-led side is set to travel to Sri Lanka on August 29.
