Prithvi Shaw Dropped From Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy Squad Over Fitness Issues

The opening batter Prithvi Shaw has been dropped from Mumbai’s squad for the Ranji Trophy 2024 match against Tripura.

While there is no official confirmation for no reason for the exclusion, reports indicate that Shaw has been advised to work on his fitness and his drop has been connected with disciplinary issues also.

Shaw missed Mumbai’s condition camp in Bengaluru in July and the Buchi Babu Trophy in Chennai. He started his domestic season with an impressive score of 76 for Mumbai during second innings of the second innings of the Irani Cup 2024 where Mumbai secured a win after 27 years.

During the Ranji Trophy match against Baroda, Shaw made scores of 7 and 12 while amassing 1 and 39* runs in the nine-wicket win over Maharastra.

According to some reports, Mumbai selectors and team management felt that Shaw was overweight and also miffed with him for not taking net practice sessions seriously.

While Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur are consistent in the nets, Shaw has reportedly been skipping sessions.

When he does attend, he tends to take it lightly and get out cheaply during net sessions. Some reports suggested that Rahane and head coach Omkar Salvi concurred with the selectors in the decision to drop Shaw.

It has been further reported that Prithvi Shaw has been told to follow two weeks of a fitness programme prepared by Mumbai Cricket Association trainers.

Prithvi Shaw has been subjected to a number a off field altercations, including a brawl at a nightclub in February 2023. He was also suspended for a few months in 2019 by the BCCI for a doping violation.

Shaw became the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to score Centuries on debut in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy.

He made his international debut in the first Test against West Indies in October 2018. Prithvi Shaw was the youngest Indian to score a century on his test debut and the youngest from his country to achieve the milestone after Tendulkar.

Shaw is only 24 years old and has displayed his prolific talent in the domestic circuit several times. He was an integral part of the Mumbai team that won the Ranji trophy last season. Shaw notably scored a 383 ball 379 against Assan in January 2023.

The Ranji Trophy 2024 match between Mumbai and Tripura will be played on October 26 at Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium.
