Phil Salt to Lead England for Australia T20Is After Injured Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler has been ruled out of England’s T20I home series against Australia and could also miss the five-match ODI series. Meanwhile Phil Salt will be taking captaincy in the T20s.

The ODI captain Jos Buttler sustained an injury while preparing for the men’s hundred, which ruled him out of the tournament. He had targeted to return to action for Lancashire’s Vitality Blast quarter-final against Sussex on Wednesday night for a comeback ahead of the white ball series, which begins at the Utilita Bowl on September 11.

But he could miss the rest of the summer having not played any cricket since England’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India on June 27. Phil salt experience came while deputizing for Buttler as Manchester Originals captain during the Hundred, will take the reins and will be the wicketkeeper.

Harry Brook has been Ollie Pope’s deputy during Sri Lanka’s tour of England 2024 and will be leading the 50-over leg of Australia’s tour.

Surrey All-rounder Jamie Overton has been called in as the replacement for England’s squad for the T20 format. However, he is selected to play as a specialist batter as he continues his recovery from a back stress fracture. Jordan Cox is currently involved with a test series against Sri Lanka and will be added to the ODI squad as cover.

“Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up as a replacement in the T20 squad. The three-match IT20 series is set to begin next week at the Utilita Bowl, Southampton, on 11 September 2024. Additionally, Essex batter Jordan Cox has been added to the ODI squad as cover,” the ECB said in a statement.

Jos Buttler will be clear on returning to action along with newly appointed White-ball coach Brendon McCullum taking over in January for the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

Marcus Trescothick will continue to oversee England’s white-ball duties in the limited-overs series against Australia and a tour of the Caribbean in November. The first match of the T20I series will be played on September 11 at The Ageas Bowl.
