The first ODI features the return of Senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the action after the T20 World Cup campaign. Winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat considering the pitch conditions at R. Premadasa Stadium.
Opening for Sri Lanka Pathum Nissaka put a solid start for the hosts with 56 runs from 75 deliveries and Avishka Fernando was sent out for 1 run. Siraj picked the first wicket for India in the third over. With Axar Patel, Dube, and Kuldeep Yadav crumbling top and middle order, Sri Lanka lost six wickets for 142 runs. Sundar picked an important wicket of Nissanka in the 27 over.

Dunith Wellalage came to the rescue smashing 67* runs in the match. Akila Dananjaya joined hands with Dunith in the death overs giving a stunning knock to take Sri Lanka crossing the 200-run mark.
Axar Patel led the bowling attack as he bagged two wickets and conceded only 33 runs in 10-over spells. Notably, Shubman Gill came to bowl and gave 14 runs in one over spell.
