Pat Cummins on Gill’s Dismissal in WTC 2023 Final
Right after an unimpressive 1st inning, team India planned to make a steady start in their second inning to stay alive in the WTC 2023 Final game. But the plans scattered when Boland dismissed Gill in the 8th over.
While batting at 18 runs in the second innings on Day 4, Gill lost his wicket when he edged a Scott Boland delivery to the gully where Green dived to his left to take an incredible catch.
But the dismissal created controversy and raised doubts surrounding the legality of the catch with multiple replays of the event not providing a clear picture.
TV umpire Richard Kettleborough eventually ruled in favour of the fielding team, and was heard saying ‘fingers underneath the ball’.
Earlier, Indian captain Rohit Sharma opens on Gill’s controversial dismissal in the WTC 2023 final against Australia and said the third umpire should have looked at more replays before coming up with the decision.
The huge number of Indian fans at The Oval weren’t pleased with the decision either and they didn’t have kind words for Green. Australia captain Pat Cummins, however, felt it was a fair catch.
“Passionate fans but I thought it was a fair catch. Green was an absolute screamer and obviously we’re just players, we’re out on the field so we leave it in the umpire’s hands and personally, probably the best umpire in the world, he knows the rule books, he’s seen every angle. I’d probably back his decision more so than emotional, passionate fans that are looking on a big screen from 100 meters away,” Cummins said.
Scott Boland plays a crucial role in winning the WTC 2023 game for Australia. Named as a replacement player for Josh Hazlewood, Boland bagged 2 wickets n the 1st inning and bagged 3 wickets in the 2nd inning.
Apart from dismissing Gill, Boland scattered India’s dream of lifting the trophy by dismissing Virat Kohli and Jadeja on the final day of the match.
This is the second time where India loses the WTC Final. In the first edition, India loses the trophy to New Zealand while in the second edition, India loses the trophy to Australia.
